Strom Sandy

Sunday October 29, 2012

The seaport and Williams-Mystic have been frantically preparing for the Hurricane Sandy. This storm is looking to be a 100-year storm, so it is going to be and eventful few days. Jim has ordered all of us to report to the MSC tomorrow at 0900. We are going to be staying there tomorrow night and perhaps longer. I really hope not because staying in the MSC with 18 students, a few faculty and the Mystic Seaport security does not sound that pleasant, but there could be some fun times.

As for the storm today the winds have picked up and there is quite a bit of chop on the Mystic River and a mist has begun to fall. It will be interesting to see what Sandy brings.

To get ready Carr house has move our patio furniture inside, along with the trashcan and recycling bin. We also packed up most of the food and brought it over to the MSC where there is a generator so if the power goes out the food will stay fresh.

After our meeting with Jim at the MSC, Anna and I went of for a walk around town. We headed to the seaport where the water was already up the front of the Galley Restaurant.

Then we walked father into and saw extraordinary high water levels that had brought water up into residential area right along the Mystic River.

The Wind was also pretty strong and it was the roughest I have ever seen the Mystic River.

As we walked back from town the rain and the wind increased. The rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing, doing some laundry and getting ready to move in to the MSC at 1500. I was able to watch the wind and rain increase from the comforts of Carr house.

After moving to the MSC we lost power around 1600, but we were lucky enough to have the generator at the MSC to provide power. I spent the evening playing Risk and watch Lord of the Rings with my classmates.

We made one more venture outside around 2100 and we saw that the water level had risen and it had crossed route 27 and was making its way up the Mystic Seaport parking lot. There was also a fair amount of wind.

After checking our own house and finding water in the basement of both Carr and Albion houses, Betsy and I went for a walk around town to see the damage the storm had done. In town there were high water levels, but they were receding from what we saw during the peak of the storm. There were leaves and brush down in places and it marked how far the water reached on shore. In town many of the shop owners were already cleaning up debris and pumping water out of basements. Overall is seemed that were we rather lucky, in our immediate area, that the damage was not too bad. Besides some flooding and power outages all seemed well.

Today was more clean up from the storm. Williams-Mystic students cleaned up leaves and brush brought down by the storm and spent most of the day in the MSC utilizing the electricity. After three days without power, it was restored tonight around 2100h. Also the basements of Carr and Albion were pumped out today, but with power restored the students living in these houses were told to stay in the MSC just incase of electrical shortages. I must admit I am relived to have power back and it is great to see that things are retuning to normal here in mystic. I feel rather lucky to be living in a place not hit to terribly hard by Sandy because it looks like other parts of the North east were hit much harder then we were.
