The Position

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Software Development will be responsible for leading the development and testing of high quality software (commercial off-the-shelf) solutions on-time, within scope and on-budget, based on market and business requirements defined by the Product Management organization.

The VP of Software Development is expected to optimize results through the effective use of all resources; people, processes and tools. Since people and teams are GeoComm’s greatest assets and its greatest investment, the VP of Software Development must be a strong leader and people manager, actively engaging individuals and teams to meet or exceed the defined business objectives.

The scope of the position is as follows:

In Scope:

•  Development of all software solutions for external customers

•  Development and Software Quality Control (SQC) functions and all related positions, such as an Architect, Product Owners, Business Systems Analysts, Software Engineers, SQC resources and Technical Writer

•  Relevant tools, such as Esri (GeoComm is an Esri Value Add Developer), VersionOne, Team Foundation Server, GitHub and GitPrime

•  Relevant processes, such as Agile Scrum, Pragmatic Marketing (relevant development related processes) and DevOps

Out of Scope:

•  Internal, IT related systems

•  Market / business requirement definitions

•  Implementation

•  Support

Primary responsibilities include:

•  Ensures high quality software solutions are delivered within scope, on time and within budget.

•  Strategic and tactical leadership of the Software Development organization, including architecture, product development and quality assurance.

•  Drive a common technology platform and evolution across GeoComm’s developed software products.

•  Develop and actively lead high performing teams.

•  Work closely with colleagues, especially VPs of Product Management and Client Services.

•  Implement and/or utilize best practices and standardized processes.

•  Communicate effectively with executive leaders, key customers and business partners.

•  Manage department to budget and financial targets.

•  Hire, train, develop, coach and appraise staff effectively. Takes corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy. Consults with Human Resources as appropriate.

•  Keep up-to-date on information and technology affecting functional area(s) to increase innovation and ensure compliance.

•  Embrace continuous improvement within department and across company.

•  Sets standards and guides team on issue/escalation management. Defines strategies to investigate and identify root cause of issues, address customer complaints regarding quality and service/experience. Work across teams to investigate and define root causes of issues as they arise. Develop strategies to mitigate project delivery risks.

•  Ensure documentation of Architecture (current and roadmap) and best practices, processes and procedures.

Candidate Profile

The fully qualified candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field (a Masters’ degree preferred). This individual should have a minimum of seven or more years of experience managing a technology and/or development department along with solid technical knowledge and experience in the use and application of the most current technologies and products used in the industry
