Presentations

The first presentation was given by Mike Findlow who works for Man Coedon the subject of PPE Back to Basics. Mike explained the wide range of PPE his company use and how he and his colleagues put this equipment to the test. He showed a short video of his colleague sawing through the legs of trousers with a chain saw. The tests proved that the PPE would protect people in the event of an accident. He spoke of PPE super hero syndrome where people feel safe just by wearing PPE and how their perception of risk diminishes. The theme and message throughout the talk was that PPE was very much a last resort he described the limitations of PPE and said that providing and using it was no excuse tonot follow a safe system of work.

Following the presentation there was a discussion around the law and PPE which included a case due before the Court of Appeal involving a social worker who had slipped and damaged their ankle. The social worker is arguing that they slipped on ice because suitable footwear had not been provided by their employer.

The second presentation was by Chris Lloyd who has put a lot of work into setting up the new MOHSG website Chris showed the group the progress he had made and explained the various sections of the site and asked for suggestions about what else was needed. His ideas included having a member’s forum and a non-member’s forum, advertisements, committee information, FAQs section, member’s names and links to other safety groups.

There was discussion about what could be included on the site and further suggestions were made.
