AN INTRODUCTION

TO THE PARISH

The Catholic Parish of Hoddesdon was only founded in 1932 although there was a little Catholic Chapel dedicated to St Catherine which stood where now stands the Clock Tower. This was used by pilgrims on the route to Walsingham and is mentioned as early as 1242. In 1898 an order of nuns, known as the Canonesses of St Augustine, purchased Rawdon House and re-named it St Monica’s Priory. The small chapel there was also used by the handful of Catholics who attended Mass on Sundays.

In 1932 the Canons Regular of St Augustine moved into Hoddesdon and founded the parish. They bought Esdaile House and used it as a house of studies for students of their Order, but also they were responsible for running the new parish. So, their Prior Fr Vincent Scully was the first parish priest of Hoddesdon. Parishioners attended Mass in the House chapel. In 1933 the Sisters of Our Lady arrived in Hoddesdon where they opened a convent, St Cross, and school. In 1935 the first part of St Augustine’s school was built by the parish.

In 1958 the Augustinians left Hoddesdon and the Archdiocese of Westminster took over the parish, sending Fr John Longstaff to be the first Diocesan parish priest. St Augustine’s Priory was demolished in order that a new church could be built on the same site. However, its vast cellars were retained as a crypt. This crypt was fully refurbished in 1995 to make a suitable meeting place for larger gatherings of parishioners.

In 1962 the new church of St Augustine was opened. This church was reordered firstly in 1989 and secondly in 1996; and redecorated in 2010.
