Reaction Category 1 Name: ______

In this lab you will react iron metal with oxygen gas to make solid iron (III) oxide; write and balance this equation.

The source of the iron will be “steel wool”. Where do you think the oxygen gas will come from for this experiment?

What “driving force” do you think you will have to add to steel wool to get this reaction to happen?

Based on the chemical equation you wrote, come up with a good name for this type of reaction.

Reaction of Iron and Oxygen

Step / Procedures / Comments, Observations, Errors and Data
1 / ·  Examine, observe and measure the mass of a dry piece steel wool (Fe) / Mass of dry steel wool:
2 / ·  CAREFULLY push the piece of steel wool into the bottom of a test tube
3 / ·  Measure 50mL of tap water and pour it into a 150mL beaker
·  Tilt the beaker and lower the mouth of the test tube into the water in the beaker; move it around so the water goes up into the test tube as far as possible [this will NOT be easy]
·  Rest the test tube on the bottom of the beaker making sure the test tube is perfectly upright ]
4 / ·  Use a dropper to add &/or remove water until the level of water in the beaker is the same as the level in the test tube
Use a Sharpie® to mark the water level on the outside of the beaker

5 con’t / ·  Take initial observations
·  Allow set-up to sit for several days (document day)
·  Observe each day; document what happens to steel wool and water level / Initial:
6 / ·  CAREFULLY remove the steel wool from the test tube, take final observations and measure the final mass / Mass of steel wool:

Analysis

1) Use your lab evidence to explain, how you knew a reaction occurred.

2) In your own words, define “driving force”:

3a) Research and explain (using at least 3 sentences), an interesting everyday (“real world”) use for the compound you made in this experiment.

3b) Why was this everyday (“real world”) use interesting to you?
