National Flight Academy

2015 Scholarship Policy

  • Purpose

The National Flight Academy (NFA) Scholarship Policy is established to ensure that the generous gifts from our donors are properly awarded to applicants in a documented manner.Additionally, this policy establishes the NFA Scholarship Review Board that will be responsible for reviewing each application and determining if a scholarship should be awarded using the NFA Scholarship Rubric.

  • Financial Obligations

Partial scholarships will cover $500 of the $1,250tuition cost. Partial scholarship recipients are financially responsible for the remaining $750to be paid at least 30 days prior to the start date of the course week in which the recipient is enrolled. If the remainder of tuition is not paid at least 30 days prior to the recipient’s camp start date, they will forfeit their partial scholarship.

  • Limitations

A scholarship applicant may only be awarded one partial scholarship per calendar year. Additionally, if an applicant has paid for a Deployment and subsequently applies for a scholarship and is awarded one, the applicant is not entitled to a refund. If an applicant is awarded a scholarship, but cannot attend a Deployment during that calendar year, the applicant is invited to re-apply the following year.

  • Required Documents

Each scholarship applicant must complete all of the specified essays and provide at least one letter of recommendation (from anyone outside the applicant’s family). Once all of this documentation is received by NFA, an applicant file and corresponding number will be established for the applicant. The Registration Team will distribute these files to the NFA Scholarship Review Board for grading using the NFA Scholarship Rubric.

  • Scholarship Review Board

The NFA Scholarship Review Board will be comprised of one member from the program staff, one University of West Florida member, and an educator from the NFA staff.Reviewers will only be provided with the applicant’s essays, assigned number, grade level (for reference in evaluating writing), and aletter of recommendation in order to eliminate any personal biason behalf of the Review Board. The Board reviews applications year round and the award process will begin in February of the award year. Scholarships will be awarded until all funding for that year has been obligated.

  • Scholarship Rubric

The NFA Scholarship Rubric is attached and will be used by each NFA Scholarship Review Board member to ensure consistency in evaluating each application. NFA does not expect essays written by a 7th grade student to be as well written as those from a 12th grade student.
