Risk Management Training Plan

PURPOSE:

The purpose of the Risk Management Training is to assure that all InterCare staff are educated regarding identification and control of risks and reduction of safety concerns. Risk management training will also aid in incorporating safety practices so that patient care services are delivered in a safe manner by medical providers and staff in order to maintain a culture of safety.

POLICY:

Providers and employees will receive periodic education/training to gain an understanding of evolving risk exposures in the practice and how care systems affect patient safety. New providers and employees are oriented to risk management and patient safety concepts during orientation. Important components of the education program include communication skills, teamwork, safety, event and near-miss reporting.

SCOPE:

Risk management training will apply to physicians, practice administrators, managers, mid-level providers, and all clinical and nonclinical employees of the practice. All employees are accountable for risk management and patient safety and the systems in which he or she works. This will help to ensure the highest level of patient/employee safety and to minimize risk.

PROCEDURE:

Risk Management Training will be an ongoing process. This will aid in the identification and reduction of potential risks and aid in the provision of quality patient care. This plan will be reviewed annually and training needs will be identified based on review of events, surveys, malpractice concerns, industry trends, and other High Risk, High Volume, Problem Prone areas. Training will be provided to the following groups in the identified manner. Agenda’s and attendance will be documented.

Nonclinical Employees:

·  Annual education via computerized learning: Confidentiality, Corporate compliance, HIPAA , Workplace Violence, Fire Safety, Customer Relations, Fundamentals of Quality Improvement

·  Staff meetings: Site managers will discuss topics related to risk management. Topics for discussion could include: event reporting, compliance with legal or regulatory matters, policy or procedure review

Clinical Support Employees:

·  Annual education via computerized learning: Confidentiality, Corporate compliance, HIPAA , Workplace Violence, Fire Safety, Customer Relations, Infection Control, Fundamentals of Quality Improvement

·  Staff meetings: Site managers will discuss topics related to risk management. Topics for discussion could include: event reporting, compliance with legal or regulatory matters, policy or procedure review

·  Clinical Education Sessions: The Clinical Systems department will provide education and updates on various topics over the course of the year. This will include, but are not limited to: Policy and Procedure review, areas of clinical concern(i.e. consent completion), Universal protocol, Infection Control and Medication Management

Providers:

·  Annual education via computerized learning: Confidentiality, Corporate compliance, HIPAA , Workplace Violence, Fire Safety, Customer Relations, Infection Control, Fundamentals of Quality Improvement

·  Provider meetings: The CMO will provide Risk Management training at the provider meetings. This will include, but is not limited to: event reporting, compliance with legal or regulatory matters, policy or procedure review

·  Email and Newsletter: The CMO will provide Risk Management training and awareness through the utilization of emails and InterCare’s Risk Management newsletter. This could include notification of pertinent areas of risk, pending or resolved cases included in ECRI monthly emails, education on key areas of documentation, etc.

·  CME: Providers will be encouraged to earn CME in the area of Risk and Safety

Administration:

·  Annual education via computerized learning: Confidentiality, Corporate compliance, HIPAA , Workplace Violence, Fire Safety, Customer Relations, Infection Control, Fundamentals of Quality Improvement

·  Leadership meetings: All individuals in leadership roles at InterCare will participate in leadership meetings. These meetings will include various areas of training including policy and procedure updates, event reporting, patient and employee satisfaction

·  Various outside leadership trainings: InterCare will continue to support and provide various opportunities for training with its leadership staff. This may include: Joint Commission Conferences, Annual Risk training (CMO), NextGen User group conferences, ECRI updates and webinars, NACHC webinars, etc.
