New Chief Probation Officer Orientation

New Chief Probation Officer Orientation

February 5, 2014

In an effort to assist Indiana’s newly or recently appointed Chief and Assistant CPOs in learning the basics necessary to lead their department, the POPAI Chiefs Executive Committee will sponsor a one day orientation event which is designed to provide attendees with a toolbox of information containing ideas on thinking like an executive/leader/manager. While it is understood not all jurisdictions operate under the exact same set of rules, several key areas of responsibility have been targeted which will likely affect all probation executives at some point in time. The focus of this training will be to provide attendees with general knowledge related to basic responsibilities involved in being an effective probation administrator.

This year’s training will be a joint effort with the Indiana Judicial Center and will be provided at no cost to attendees who are current POPAI members. Non-members may attend for only $25.00. The training will be held in the auditorium of the Indiana Judicial Center in downtown Indianapolis.

Specific topics to be covered include:

·  Budgeting

·  Human Resources…Hiring/Firing

·  Personnel Management

·  Supervision Tools

·  Creative Programming

Chief Probation Officer Summit

February 7, 2014

The Chief Probation Officer Summit provides Chief Probation Officers an opportunity for networking, information sharing, problem solving and general discussion with colleagues from Indiana’s 150 or so probation departments. The setting is informal and the program is flexible with regard to time and agenda.

The keynote speaker for the Summit will be Greg Ponchot from Power Consulting. Mr. Ponchot will present his newly developed curriculum for CPO’s with over 30 individual training modules which can be used to help train staff and lead your department. Attached to this information is a handout with more specific information about the modules included.

Afternoon sessions will include:

·  A roundtable discussion regarding future training needs for probation officers and departments. With dwindling budgets, limited time, and more requirements, how can we, as the leaders in our field, help to determine our own needs and acquire the appropriate resources needed to adequately train staff to provide effective services to clients.

·  Small Group Discussions on relevant topics

POPAI’s Corporate Members will also be in attendance on Friday to share their information and network with attendees.
