The Township of Algonquin Highlands is seeking applications from experienced, qualified persons for the temporary full-time position of Recreation Coordinator. This position will act as a fill-in for a temporary leave on a 6 month contract. Under the direction of the Manager of Parks, Recreation and Trails the Recreation Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, overseeing, evaluating and promoting all sport, recreation, healthy active living, leisure programs and special events for all ages and abilities, as well as for the supervision of the staff associated with the related recreation facilities and programming throughout the Township of Algonquin Highlands.
The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Minimum of two (2) years relevant experience including supervisory and event planning experience.
- Post-secondary education in recreation/leisure studies or related discipline/equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge related to developing and administering community programming and special events within a municipal setting.
- Knowledge of risk management techniques and procedures relative to providing community programming and events.
- Standard First Aid/CPR C Certificate would be an asset.
- Must have very strong, demonstrated interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with an upbeat, outgoing, positive, creative and enthusiastic attitude.
- Excellent project/time management skills with an ability to work from memory.
- Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and various social media platforms.
- Must have own reliable transportation which can be used to access various program locations.
Wage: $26.64/hr
Hours of Work: 40hrs/wk. Typically 9am-5pm Mon-Fri with occasional evenings and weekends
as required.
Term: 6 month contract starting immediately.

PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Manager of Parks, Recreation and Trails the Recreation Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, overseeing, evaluating and promoting all sport, recreation, healthy active living, leisure programs and special events for all ages and abilities throughout the Township of Algonquin Highlands.
As a front line representative of the Municipality the Recreation Coordinator oversees and assists with daily operations and personnel, working to create a welcoming public atmosphere for visitors while ensuring exceptional customer service and a diverse range of high quality recreational opportunities.
Acting as a resource to the Department Manager, the Recreation Coordinator assists by making recommendations that will be considered in the development of short and long term operational objectives for all aspects of recreation programming, special events, and the facilities associated with them, based on community needs and emerging trends.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains schedules and supervises the necessary staff and volunteers required to operate all facilities, recreation areas and special events.
- Provides leadership and direction to recreation staff and volunteers.
- Makes recommendations to the Parks, Recreation and Trails Manager for the hiring and staffing levels of the department.
- Supervises staff in a team environment including the conduct of selection processes, identifying and providing orientation, training and development, assigning work and targets, conducting performance appraisals, and communicating disciplinary issues to the Department Manager.
- Coordinates the booking and viewing of recreation facilities and community centres.
- Maintain facilities booking and usage tracking system.
- Works to increase the overall usage of recreation facilities throughout the municipality.
- Coordinates, develops, implements, evaluates and oversees all sport, recreation and leisure programming within the Township for users of all ages and abilities including but not limited to daily/weekly programs, the Soccer Program, Swim Programs, Dorset Day Camp, etc.
- Promotes and publicizes all recreation/leisure programs/services/community centres through the incorporation of various media sources, and direct user/community contact.
- Maintains a complete inventory of recreation programming/special events/materials resources within the municipality.
- Maintains discipline among users, according to policy.
- Oversees the collection of rental fees and revenues from user fees and concessions.
- Obtains cost estimates and orders/purchases materials required for programming and special events.
- Attends and acts as a resource to Recreation Committees where appropriate and in coordination with the Department Manager.
- Prepares and distributes committee meeting agendas and minutes to committee members, the Department Manager and CAO.
- Works with committees to develop programming and special events and makes recommendations to Municipal Council.
- Provides usage data and information to the Committees and makes regular monthly activity reports to the Department Manager.
- Inventories existing and ongoing programs/events, completes needs assessments, and makes programming recommendations.
- Facilitates the creation and implementation of programs.
- Conducts program visits and surveys to ensure effective program delivery identifying areas for improvements as well as potential areas of growth.
- Monitors program delivery and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Recommends a modern variety of recreational activities to be offered throughout the Township with consideration to providing access to various levels of physical, financial, demographic and geographic requirements.
- Maintains and evaluates statistical attendance data for programming and recreation facility visitation to assist in the formation of recommendations for opportunities of improvement relative to revenues over expenditures with the goal of increasing the efficiency of budget allocations.
- Continually works to understand the recreational needs and interests of the area maintaining a sound knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of community recreation programs in a municipal setting.
- Responds to community needs and public inquiries/complaints as they relate to recreation programming.
- Prepares and submits water samples for the Dorset Recreation Centre, the Dorset Tower and the Oxtongue Lake Community Centre for submission to the appropriate lab for testing in accordance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act, Regulation 319 (Small Drinking Water Systems).
- Coordinates and conducts custodial needs for the Dorset Recreation Centre and coordinates and supervises custodial needs for the Oxtongue Lake Community Centre.
- Identifies maintenance requirements for the Dorset Recreation Centre and communicates needs to the Department Manager.
- Monitor supplies and equipment, maintain/order stocks and inventory and report any issues to Department Manager.
- Responsible for the regular review and inspection of maintenance requirements for alarm systems and automated lifts within community centres.
- Communicates with local health unit, service providers and inspectors during regular inspections and follow up documentation/reporting for licensed commercial rental kitchens and the organization of food services during special events.
- Ensures regular inspection and proper maintenance of facility equipment including fitness equipment, fire extinguishers and AED devices.
- Assists the Department Manager to review program and facility fees on an annual basis.
- Provides operational input to assist in the budgeting process, including forecasting and monitoring of revenues and expenditures for the development of annual and 5 year operating plans.
- Keeps staff and volunteer data regarding certifications and training.
- Assists the Department Manager in seeking, researching, applying for and administering grant and funding opportunities to maximize programs and facility/property improvements.
- Accountable for staying on budget target and estimates for assigned work programs under the direction of the Department Manager.
- Assists in the preparation of reports.
- Responsible for maintaining appropriate and accurate financial records to municipal standards.
- Responsible for daily cash and credit card handling to process transactions, compile daily revenue summaries and make deposits.
- Frequent contacts with interdepartmental municipal staff, the public, local residents, interest groups and various stakeholders, to provide information, discuss services, and coordinate programs and special events.
- Seeks opportunities for partnerships between local resources for the development and administration of recreation programming and special events.
- Fosters and maintains working relations with local tourism/promotional organizations as well as neighbouring municipal recreation departments.
- Develops and maintains relationships with external organizations/service providers who provide programming opportunities within rented facilities.
- Organizes and participates in all aspects, including volunteer recruitment and oversight for the delivery of special events. Events include but are not limited to the annual Dorset Snowball Winter Carnival, Dorset Children’s Fishing Derby, Oxtongue Lake Canada Day Celebrations, Community Pitch In, Volunteer Appreciation and other special events as assigned.
- Responsible and accountable for special assignments as assigned by the Department Manager.
- Other duties as assigned from time to time.
HOURS OF WORK
Hours of work are as required to meet the responsibility of the position. Usual core hours are 40 hours per week 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some extra time will be required to attend various evening meetings, weekend events and other functions. The primary workplace will be the Dorset Recreation Centre.
WORKING CONDITIONS
A considerable amount of the work is performed in a normal office environment however some driving to various recreational facilities and programs is required for administration, staff oversight, meetings, to pick up supplies and materials and to conduct custodial duties. Incumbent has the ability to move freely to reduce fatigue.
EDUCATION
Post-secondary education in Recreation/Leisure studies is required. Experience in a related field and/or a thorough working knowledge of recreation programming development will also be considered.
Small Drinking Water Systems Operator Certificate is preferred and/or is required to be obtained.
Standard First Aid/CPR-C.
EXPERIENCE
