HOLY WEEK & EASTER SUNDAY 2015

HOLY WEEK & EASTER SUNDAY

One of the experiences every Catholic Christian ought to have is to go through a whole HOLY WEEK. What a wonderful thing it would be to be at Mass every day this week.

On Palm Sunday the Church celebrates Christ’s entry into Jerusalem to accomplish his paschal mystery. It is the beginning of our HOLY WEEK and EASTER CELEBRATIONS.

The first three days will involve a short said Mass, with music and a short homily. In these Masses we shall meet some of the characters who play their part in the events of this week.

Holy Thursdayhas two great celebrations. First the Chrism Mass, when traditionally all priests renew their priestly vows and the Holy Oils are blessed by the Bishop. If we are free, it is a great privilege to be at Newcastle Cathedral with Bishop Seamus for this Mass. In the evening is the celebration of the Lord’s Supper followed by the procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the Altar of Repose and the watch of prayer until midnight. Here we begin to enter into the depths of our Lord’s sacrifice, the heart of his love for us all.

All too soon it is Good Friday and the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion. During the Liturgy the Holy Cross is unveiled and adored, while we stand at the foot of the Cross with Our Lady and Saint John.

The Easter Vigil begins in darkness and ends in the glorious light of the resurrection, and party in the Parish House will follow!

Our Mass on Easter Sunday is a song of praise to the risen Christ who is our life and whose triumph over death we proclaim to all the world.

It is impossible to celebrate Easter if we have not endured the struggle of the cross. The resurrection is not won easily. Are you willing to be alongside our Lord each day this week?
