End Of Life Care
(1 Full Study Day – any nursing assistant or allied health professional assistant) / These 1 day learning events are open to any nursing assistant or allied health professional assistant working within the acute hospitals. They are an exciting opportunity to help increase your knowledge and support your delivery of end of life care.
The aims of the day are to:
  1. Raise your awareness of the launch of NHSGG&C ‘Guidance for Person Centred Care in the Last Stages of Life’.
  2. Discuss the challenges that exist around the delivery of Person Centred Care at the end of life.
  3. Identify key communication skills and ways, in which these skills can be used to support conversations at end of life.
The day will also support building resilience and looking after yourself. / APD

Introduction to Palliative Care for Registered Nursing Staff / Palliative care is about promoting the best possible quality of life till the end of life for people who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. It is concerned with:
·Recognizing distress and communicating helpfully. Thinking and planning ahead.
·Helping people to cope with the impact of life-limiting illness, including the management of difficult symptoms.
·Care of the person who is dying.
·Supporting families throughout their loved one’s illness, and into bereavement.

Namaste Care / Namaste Care is a relatively new way of organising palliative care for people with advanced dementia to, hopefully, improve people’s quality of life. It could be described as:
•a specific service,
•for a specific group (people with advanced dementia or another advanced life-limiting illness)
•in a specific place (a room that has been arranged for the purpose of offering Namaste Care)
•at a specific time (morning and afternoon sessions, 7 days a week) / AH

Palliative Care Course(2 Full Study Days - For Nursing and Allied Healthcare Assistants)

This 2 day course offers a combination of taught sessions and workshops. Topics will include supporting patients and families with symptoms, communication and team working, spirituality and best practice in end of life care.

Sage & Thyme ® / Sage & Thyme® is foundation level training based upon evidence relating to communication skills and psychological assessment and support.
The Sage & Thyme® model can be taught to any member of staff who has contact with distressed people (not just patients) and in any setting (e.g. hospital, patient’s home, nursing home, hospice, social care). / AH
SAGE & THYME (Communication Foundation Level Workshop) / This exciting communication workshop is practice-based and would be relevant for all health & social care staff working in a range of care sectors. It is equally relevant for all grades of nursing staff as well as, patient activity leaders and voluntary/statutory care support staff. / APD
Symptom Assessment & Management
(6 part course) / The aim of this course is to provide Physicians, GP’s, Registered Nurses and AHP’s the opportunity to:-
  • Identify why people living with life limiting illness deteriorate and how this may present.
  • Discuss the benefits of using validated symptom assessment tools to optimise care delivery and interdisciplinary communication.
  • Analyse the common symptoms experienced within advanced life limiting illness alongside the new Scottish Palliative Care Guidelines.
  • Identify the benefits, challenges and barriers surrounding ‘diagnosing dying’.
  • Reflect on practice and current clinical scenarios

Tea and Topic / A short master class by experts in their field. Appropriate for all trained staff, directed towards GPs, nursing staff & allied health professionals. The subjects have been chosen by staff locally and will vary monthly. / RPCT
VoED& DNACPR (Verification of expected death & do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation) / Suitable for all registered nurses working in the community, new staff and staff requiring an update. Training on the process of verifying an expected death and what is necessary to deem yourself competent. Information and discussions around DNACPR in practice. / RPCT
