The Organisations Fund 2017-2020 Provides Multi-Year Funding to Contribute to the Core

The Organisations Fund 2017-2020 provides multi-year funding to contribute to the core operations of small to medium organisations in delivering arts and cultural activities that generate public value to Queensland. This value is derived through innovation, inclusivity and economic growth; including the employment and promotion of Queensland artists and arts workers.

Key Facts

·  $30.5 million will be invested in the Organisations Fund 2017-2020, with a total of $7.63 million per year to 39 small to medium arts organisations.

·  This funding represents an increase of $572,000 per year (totalling $2.29 million over four years) compared to the Organisations Fund 2014-2016 which previously allocated $21.2 million to 35 small to medium arts organisations.

·  Five of the 39 organisations to receive four year funding have also secured additional funding of $275,000 per annum (totalling $1.1 million over four years) under the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, a partnership with the Australian Government.

·  There are eight new organisations (21%) receiving multi-year core program funding.

·  The average four year funding level is $195,827, compared with $201,849 under the Organisations Fund 2014-2016.

·  Of the 39 organisations:

o  56% target young people

o  62% target regional audiences specifically or directly through their programming

o  82% reach and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and activity

o  71% are based in Brisbane, 8% in South East Queensland and 21% in regional Queensland.

·  Of the 69 applications, 49% were new entrants and 39% were regionally-based organisations.

·  This highly competitive fund was assessed by an independent multi-artform panel with a probity advisor involved through the process to ensure integrity, transparency and accountability.

Access Arts Inc $800,000

Access Arts creates opportunities for artists with disability or experiencing disadvantage by removing barriers to arts and cultural participation for the one in five Queenslanders with disability. Access Arts delivers programs and professional development in all art-forms to support its vision that all Queenslanders are free to participate, create and work in the arts.

Anywhere Theatre Festival Limited $320,000

Anywhere Festival is an annual Brisbane-based festival with events presented in diverse, non-traditional venues and spaces. Running since 2011, the festival has expanded its artistic product from theatre to include circus, dance, comedy, music, workshops and much more, and has also expanded the festival reach from Brisbane to other regional Queensland centres and interstate.

Ausdance Qld $600,000

Ausdance Qld designs and delivers accessible and sustainable services to support Australian dance professionals. The Ausdance Qld mission is to educate, inspire and support the dance community to reach its potential as a dynamic force within local, national and international communities.

Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM) $480,000

AFCM, one of Queensland’s longest running festivals, is an annual ten day event in Townsville featuring top international and national artists. The Festival offers the Winterschool Program for high school and advanced/emerging musicians who receive coaching, mentoring and performance opportunities.

Backbone $240,000

Backbone is a service organisation and an artistic company working with young people in Queensland. Backbone’s activities include festivals, events, performance works and workshops that inspire children and young adults to develop confidence, to find their voice, and to develop versatile artistic practices.

BlakDance Australia $260,000

BlakDance is the industry body for contemporary Indigenous dance with a mission to cultivate and promote dance in Queensland communities and beyond. BlakDance supports artists and communities across many forms of dance and diverse geographies of histories and songlines.

Bleached Arts Ltd $600,000

Presented by Bleached Arts Ltd, the annual Bleach* Festival celebrates the natural beauty and lifestyle of Queensland’s beach culture through music, theatre, dance, visual arts and outdoor events supporting local arts and culture and attracting visitors to the Gold Coast region.

Blue Roo Theatre Company $280,000

Blue Roo Theatre Company creates contemporary theatre performances led by an ensemble of artists with diverse ability and impairment. The personal and private investment of the artists ensures that the work connects with everyone and poetically engages public, social and political discussions.

Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre (BEMAC) $400,000

For more than 25 years BEMAC has worked with culturally diverse artists, arts workers and communities, providing support through career development, employment and training. BEMAC aims to deliver high quality public programs, to increase audiences for world music and deliver positive outcomes for migrant and refugee communities.

Brisbane Writers Festival (BWF) $1,240,000

The long-running BWF is one of Australia’s most well-established events, supporting Queensland writing talent and encouraging engagement between readers and writers. BWF enriches Queensland communities through stories and ideas, presenting an annual writers festival, an annual Word Play program for students from Prep to Year 12, a year-round program of literary events and regional programs.

Camerata of St John's $600,000

Chamber orchestra Camerata of St John's is a company of 17 core string players who perform without a conductor. The company, along with guest artists present a subscription series of concerts in Brisbane and Toowoomba with performances in other South East Queensland centres and at national events.

Circa Contemporary Circus Ltd (Circa) $1,640,000

Since 2004 Circa has been at the frontier of new circus blurring the lines between movement, dance, theatre and circus. Featuring an ensemble of multi-skilled circus artists under the direction of Yaron Lifschitz, Circa’s award-winning works have been seen in 34 countries across six continents. Circa runs a workshop program in Brisbane and, through the touring service arTour, supports artists to tour and present performance work for local audiences.

Craft Queensland (Artisan) $1,200,000 + $220,000 VACS

Artisan, Queensland’s centre for craft and design, presents, promotes and celebrates excellence in craftsmanship and design, presenting high-quality exhibitions that support design creatives, from emerging talent to living legends. Artisan is a hub for collaboration across art disciplines and between the corporate and arts sectors, as well as being a leader in education and marketing. Its popular shop and gallery offer visitors a unique array of products from Queensland artisans.

Creative Regions Limited $400,000

Bundaberg-based Creative Regions produces performances, exhibitions, digital content and hybrid arts experiences that connect regional communities, governments and industry through the creativity of artists. Creative Regions partners with industry and all levels of government to engage with communities in creative ways.

Crossroad Arts Inc. $480,000

Based in Mackay, Crossroad Arts collaboratively develops opportunities for people with disability and those in aged care to participate in the arts. The organisation is a critical part of the arts and cultural infrastructure of the Central and Western Queensland region with a profile across the region for its work across a range of artforms. Crossroad Arts has collaborated nationally and internationally and makes a major social contribution to Queensland communities.

Dancenorth $2,200,000

Dancenorth is a contemporary dance company based in Townsville with a reputation for creating outstanding, critically acclaimed new work. As one of the longest running contemporary dance companies in Australia, Dancenorth creates professional contemporary dance that tours nationally and internationally. Dancenorth engages with local communities, working with schools, the disability sector and at risk youth.

Expressions Dance Company (EDC) $2,400,000

EDC creates and presents significant new dance productions in collaboration with respected artists, companies, festivals and venues nationally and internationally. With the talents of the extraordinary ensemble of dancers and extensive touring program, the company’s work is achieving significant national recognition.

Eyeline Publishing Limited (Eyeline) $424,000 + $220,000 VACS

Eyeline is a leading Queensland-based national art magazine which publishes criticism and analysis of contemporary visual arts, craft and related media. Eyeline brings together exhibition and book reviews, artist interviews and monographs, specialist columns and researched articles on the ideas and issues which are shaping the arts today. Eyeline covers events and exhibitions throughout Australia, the Asia-Pacific and internationally.

Flipside Circus $400,000

Flipside Circus is Queensland’s largest youth circus company with a national reputation for training and performances. Flipside Circus values children and young people as cultural creators and aims to instil the core values of safe risk taking, hard work, laughter, building trust and valuing dreams. Flipside performs throughout Queensland.

Flying Arts Alliance Inc. $885,000

Flying Arts Alliance, which celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2016, is an arts and cultural development organisation delivering visual arts projects and services to regional and remote Queensland, and fostering the growth and professional development of regional art and artists. Flying Arts helps to overcome the impacts of regional isolation and remote living through workshops, webinars, residencies, exhibitions, events, as well as business and project consulting.

Human Ventures Limited (Human) $520,000

Human delivers a balance of artistic, social and economic value, building artistic and social programs and services for partners and communities across Queensland. The organisation's social enterprise model allows delivery of programs and commercial services in a sustainable manner, demonstrating innovation and commercial approaches.

Institute of Modern Art (IMA) $1,120,000 + $220,000 VACS

Founded in 1975, IMA is Australia's second oldest contemporary art space. The organisation runs a program of exhibitions and events featuring emerging and established local, national, and international artists, profiling the moving image, sound art, and new music.

JUTE Theatre Company (JUTE) $800,000

Based in Cairns, JUTE presents text-based and devised work that tells stories from the region. Designed in collaboration with regional writers, the Write Sparks Program has been the creative heart of the company from which almost all productions and development programs have grown.

La Boite Theatre Company (La Boite) $2,880,000

La Boite is one of Australia’s longest running operating theatres with a reputation for innovation and for fostering new Australian work. Since its early days, La Boite has incorporated touring into its programs and the company continues to engage with regional Queensland communities.

Metro Arts $1,200,000

Metro Arts champions contemporary art in its many forms, providing a place for artists to take risks, create, develop, experiment, and present ambitious contemporary art. Metro Arts provides support to the wider artistic community with low cost short and long term venue hire for creative businesses, photo shoots, rehearsals, exhibitions, performances, auditions, and celebrations.

Museums and Galleries Queensland (M&GQ) $1,200,000 + $220,000 VACS

As the peak professional body, M&GQ extends its support to a network of more than 400 museums, galleries, keeping places and heritage organisations in Queensland. M&GQ delivers sector development, training and professional development, exhibition development and touring, research, advisory and advocacy programs and services which promote best practice, build skills and capacity and celebrate achievements.

Playlab $240,000

Playlab seeks to identify, nurture and develop new playwrights and plays which reflect the diversity and vibrancy of contemporary Australia. Playlab offers support to established playwrights by providing an environment which stimulates them to reach new artistic heights and produce their best work.

Queensland Folk Federation Inc. (QFF) $400,000

QFF is an innovative arts organisation that seeks to stimulate, facilitate and foster the preservation and promotion of folk culture; inspire individuals and communities to engage in artistic and cultural expression and continues to develop one of the largest arts and cultural venues in Queensland, Woodfordia. QFF’s cornerstone event, the annual Woodford Folk Festival presents more than 2000 performers and 580 events featuring local, national and international guests.

Queensland Music Network Incorporated (QMusic) $1,400,000

QMusic is Queensland's music industry development association with a focus on promoting the artistic value, cultural worth and commercial potential of Queensland music on a national and international level. QMusic delivers signature events including BIGSOUND, the biggest contemporary music industry gathering in Australia, and the Queensland Music Awards which builds the profile of the Queensland music industry.

Queensland Poetry Festival (QPF) $360,000

QPF is an independent festival and arts organisation which supports, cultivates and promotes a vibrant poetry culture in Queensland. QPF is passionate about inspiring, entertaining, challenging and bringing poetry in all its forms to a wide audience.

Queensland Writers Centre (QWC) $1,280,000

For more than 25 years, QWC has supported writing talent in Queensland, providing services for more than 2500 members who are published authors and emerging writers in all genres. Through a network of partnerships with local councils and community organisations, QWC delivers training, programs, and professional development.

Queensland Youth Orchestras (QYO) $360,000

QYO is Queensland's major orchestral training and performance organisation for young musicians aged nine to 25 years, encompassing three symphony orchestras, two concert bands, a junior string ensemble and big band. Each group performs an annual program of activities including rehearsals, tutorials, concerts and camps. The groups tour regional Queensland as well as internationally. QYO celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016.

Red Ridge (Interior Queensland Ltd) $400,000

Red Ridge brings people together in art and cultural activities in communities spread across remote western Queensland to break down isolation and create strong connections. Red Ridge facilitates flexible and creative learning programs with communities, government and donors to attract arts and non-arts engagement.

Southern Cross Soloists (SXS) $560,000

SXS are a chamber ensemble of leading Australian musicians, educators and entrepreneurs who in the past two decades have established a reputation for musical excellence. SXS produces high quality performances, collaborating with artists at the forefront of chamber music and providing innovative learning opportunities to diverse communities.

Swell Sculpture Festival Ltd $280,000

The annual Swell Sculpture Festival, Queensland’s largest outdoor public art exhibition, enlivens Gold Coast beaches for 10 days each September and creates an engaging arts environment through sculpture exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and children’s activities. The Swell Sculpture Festival attracts more than 250,000 attendees each year.
