Work undertaken 2014/15 – Infection Control

Current practice working has continued with regular routine cleaning, steam cleaning where necessary, reporting requirements of any infection control incidents, routine staff training and annual updates in infection control.

Infection control will always considered during any planned changes or improvements to the practice.

This year we have:

  • Received an Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission following a full routine surgery visit and inspection in August 2016 with particular mention being made of our infection control measures
  • Continued to use a cloud-based monitoring system for tap temperatures for better management of Legionella risk. This ensures that an alarm message would be sent to the practice in the event of any deviation from approved
  • Continued with all of our audits as listed below

Auditable records currently in place:

Annual Practice Infection Control Audit

Daily record of cleaning of medical equipment in Practice Nurse Room

Record of cleaning of medical equipment in HCA room

Record of monthly random checks of rooms at practice to check cleaning standards are satisfactory

Records of two-monthly walk through cleaning audit by cleaning contractors of all rooms

Records of steam cleaning of carpets and hard floors undertaken on a regular contract by cleaning contractors in all rooms

Infection incident reporting book in reception for staff to record any incidents – this is checked by HCA.

5. CQC Inspection Result

The Practice underwent CQC Inspection in August 2016 and was rated as Outstanding. Special mention was made of the Practice’s work on infection control and the Practice was commended during the inspection for its work on infection prevention and control, using innovative methods to achieve sustained improvements such as the use of antibacterial materials which we have on walls, seating, window blinds and floor coverings.

6. Staff Training

All staff (both clinical and non-clinical) undergo annual training in infection control relevant to their roles within the practice.

Monthly staff bulletins contain regular reminders on infection control issues.

7.Future Plans

The IPC Team is always keen to hear of any suggestion or ideas which will improve infection control standards at the practice. Members of the team interact on a daily basis and will continue to carry out various audits as listed on cleaning and infection control daily/monthly and annually.
