What makes a lesson truly outstanding? What makes ateacher say at the end of a school day, “I really had a great day with my students!”? Isn’t it simply when students (and teacher) are having fun while mastering the skills they need to learn? When students are clearly engaged in learning, then the teacher has succeeded. The question is, how do we make every lesson engaging, and every day a successful one for every student at every ability level?

This course is designed to explore the components of effective, engaging lessons through research, online videos, and professional conversations among participants. Opportunities for professional collaboration will promote sharing of our most outstanding lessons, and why they worked so well.

Upon completion of this course, teachers will have:

  • A collection of new and/or enhanced current lessons using backward planning via Danielson’s Framework and the NYS CCLS.
  • The know-how to create challenging lessons that foster student collaboration, higher level thing skills, higher level questions and answers.
  • The experience of reflecting upon their own lessons to determine what made them outstanding (or not!)
  • Research-based knowledge of the characteristics of highly effective lessons, discussions with colleagues about these lessons, and the experience of analyzing and rating them using the APPR framework.

The goal of this course is to make teachers more keenly aware of the components of great lessons and how to maximize student engagement using best practices. The course will offer information teachers need in order to plan and present excellent lessons that maximize student learning, as well ascreating a classroom environment that facilitates student achievement.
