Overview

The North Carolina Masonic Foundation seeks an experienced Chief Development Officer to manage and grow its resource development activities. The Chief Development Officer will build and lead a team of dedicated professionals committed to supporting the philanthropic mission of the $21 million Masonic Foundation and its century-old charitable organizations with combined annual budgets of $20 million.

Established by the Grand Lodge of North Carolina in 1929, the Foundation exists to financially support and ensure the vitality of the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, NC and WhiteStone: a Masonic and Eastern Star Retirement Community in Greensboro, NC. In addition, the Foundation supports the Charles Edward Cathey Scholarship Fund, the Masonic Historic Preservation Fund, and the fraternity’s endeavors to foster faith, hope, and charity across North Carolina. The Foundation is a 501c3, non-profit corporation.

The Foundation is governed by a five-member Board of Directors who oversee the investment of donations and bequests. Gifts may be made to the general fund or designated to specific purposes.

The Grand Lodge of North Carolina is a fraternal organization with approximately 40,000 members in 370 lodges across the state. Masons are men of diverse backgrounds and professions who value the opportunity to personally grow, develop friendships, and support charity, with a common goal of making the world a better place. They share a belief in a supreme being and a view of all people as equal.

The Leadership Opportunity

The Foundation’s Chief Development Officer will have the unique opportunity to build a new and extensive professional resource development organization. He or she will create and execute a philanthropic vision that will sustain and expand the Foundation’s commitments to the charitable interests of Masons across North Carolina. The ideal candidate has led a successful and verifiable resource development program and has a record of securing major and planned gifts. Duties and responsibilities include:

·  Leadership. Report directly to the Foundation board of directors. Serve as the Foundation’s primary advocate, fundraiser, spokesperson, and administrator. Responsible for sustaining a philanthropic spirit and unified sense of purpose among all staff, board members, donors, and other partners. Consult and coordinate with the Foundation and the boards and executive directors of the two homes in setting fundraising goals and priorities, soliciting gifts and stewarding donors. Ensure that the vision and strategic plan continues to chart a course for the NC Masonic Foundation’s future and articulate that vision to internal and external constituencies. Develop policies in collaboration with the Foundation board of directors that embody best industry practices and ensure continued excellence in all facets of resource development operations.

·  Resource Development. Organize and manage a comprehensive, well-coordinated fundraising program that enlarges the base of support and secures charitable funds for the Foundation’s charities. Cultivate and motivate the philanthropic spirit of Masons and Masonic lodges across the state and expand the breadth and depth of relationships with Masonic donors, widows of Masons, and community partners that will lead to sustainable funding streams and significant investments in the future of the Foundation and its designated charities. Develop a portfolio of major and planned giving prospects, secure gifts, and steward donors. Lead the ongoing growth of annual, capital and endowed resources.

·  Marketing and Communications. Work to broaden awareness of the Foundation’s brand through ongoing and consistent communication with the Masonic family. Develop formal communications and fraternal outreach programs. Travel frequently to meet with donors and prospects and visit lodges across the state. Maintain strong communications among staff, board members, donors, and collaborating charities on issues important to resource development operations.

·  Staff Development. Build a team and maintain a culture of teamwork and accountability throughout the organization. Develop an organizational vision and staffing plan in conjunction with the Foundation board of directors. Hire the organizational staff and ensure best practices in all human resources operations. Provide opportunities for professional development of staff. Engage all staff in meaningful ways that promote the foundation’s philanthropic spirit and success.

Attributes of our New Leader

The Chief Development Officer must be committed to the mission and values of the Foundation, and dedicated to creating and stewarding relationships with internal and external constituencies that enable the successful, consistent delivery of the mission. In addition, he or she should possess key attributes, including:

·  Proven leadership of a comprehensive fundraising organization with a track record of soliciting planned and major ($1M and up) outright gifts

·  At least 10 years of experience in fundraising, with experience managing and mentoring fundraising and communications staff

·  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, master’s in a relevant discipline preferred

·  Ability to articulate, verbally and in writing, a passion for the charitable mission of the Foundation and its charities

·  Demonstrated respect for, and an understanding of, the Masonic fraternity and the core values of the brethren and partnering institutions

·  Demonstrable fundraising experience with success in building dynamic relationships with key members of the community and others who can influence individual and corporate giving. Must be capable and willing to spend significant time cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gifts

·  Familiarity with major resource development software solutions

·  Track record of effectively establishing and maintaining a relationship with a non-profit board of directors
