THE TILLER

The Newsletter of the Tenth District in the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State, Inc.

In an effort to inform clubs about District and Federation Meetings I am taking this opportunity to inform you that the Tenth District Calendar goes from January-April. Our Bylaws are primarily dictated by the FGCNYs, Inc. Bylaws and we are required to have four meeting a year. Two Board meetings with guests welcome when the Director has been notified in advance; and two meetings that are open to all members of the Tenth District. Club hosting dates are set years in advance by the Hosting/ Protocol Chair with advisementfrom the Director.

2017-2018 Dates are as follows:

January 11, 2017 Board Meeting at the Orange CountyArboretum, Thomas Bull Park, Route 211, Montgomery, NY. We will be using the Kousa Greenhouse for the meeting with Roscoe-Rockland Garden Club hosting. Coffee will start at 9:30 and the meeting at 10:00 am.

Our April meeting will be hosted by Community Garden Club of Liberty in April with a tentative date of April 26 which is a Wednesday. This is the Installation Meeting with a luncheon for incoming District Officers. This date change is due to our usual date falling in Passover/Easter week. A date change will be on the January Agenda for approval.

Ways to spend the months when you can’t be outside gardening

  1. Visit websites on plants and gardening. This will give you more information than is usually available in a catalog. I see many perennials, shrubs and annuals that look beautiful BUT if they are not deer resistant they will not be planted on my property. Save the time and expense of ordering something that when planted will be buffet material for deer.
  1. Taxonomy: I admit this is not of interest to everyone but a favorite website of mine is the NY Flora Atlas. This site has a wealth of information on plant species, plant images, and Herbarium records. Discover what that is coming up in your area.
  1. Garden writers: check out your local library, Amazon, or Timber Press online for books about gardens, gardening or novels that take place in a garden. The Secret Garden is a favorite of mine from childhood.
  1. Look out the window and take stock of your garden areas. Is there an area that you always thought about planting but “never had the time” to plan it out-hello. Curling up in a soft throw with a drink; surrounded by garden books, graft paper and catalogs could be one of the very best ways to deal with being inside.

I hope you enjoy these days of respite from gardening chores.
