SUMMER 2009

1

From the DC

Firstly, I would like to welcome all new members and their parents. Please try to attend as many rallies and other fixtures as you can in your early days of membership. This will help us to help you, and encourage you in the right direction. You will find that as you get older and school demands increase your available time for pony club will decrease.

Our programme is available here and on our website and any additions/alterations/cancellations will be made by e-mail, so please open your email daily. If you want to ask any questions at all, please try to contact me on 07880 702 704. You can always leave a message so I can get back to you.

We are again hosting Area Horse Trials this year on Sunday August 2nd. This requires a great deal of effort from many people, so if you have not yet been asked to help please ring me and volunteer. You do not need to have any experience, as the old hands will show you what to do.

Have a great summer holiday and I look forward to seeing you at many events.

Richard Lucas

From the Chief Instructor

It only seems 5 minutes since we were indoors doing rallies in the dark January evenings.

There have been a wide variety of activities over the past few months, rallies, stable management afternoons,cross-country clinics to name but a few. All have been well attended and I have enjoyed watching you improve and having fun.

It has been great to welcome so many new members and I hope you are all enjoying the programme. If we are missing anything out then please let us know. Remember it is your club.

We are now looking forward to the summer with camp, competitions, area qualifiers and rallies and I look forward to watching you all continue to improve and enjoy your club.

What to wear

To remind members of the correct dress for Pony Club events, here is a brief summary

Mounted Rallies

Pony club sweatshirt, plain shirt or branch polo shirt with PC tie, plain beige, navy or black jodhpurs, brown or black boots, plain black or brown chaps. Hair must be tied back or worn in a hairnet. All clothing must be clean and tidy.

For cross-country rallies a body protector is compulsory. Cross-country colours can be worn if preferred.

Gloves should always be worn.

Hats must be to the latest PC standard and must be worn at all times with the chinstrap fastened. Hats will be checked and a PC tag applied.

For fun rides it is not necessary to wear official Pony Club dress but the hat and body protector rules apply.

Unmounted rallies

PC sweatshirt, and practical trousers such as straight-legged jeans or jodhpurs. Sturdy footwear (not trainers)

Ponies should be clean and well groomed. Tack must be clean, well fitting and in good condition.

Tetrathlon News

East Cornwall have had a very successful season so far – everyone who has competed has been involved in a prize-winning team on at least one occasion, and at several competitions none of our members have come away empty handed. The individual results have mostly been on the website. We also held a highly successful Triathlon at Lux Park in March which raised over £700 for Branch funds, and for which many thanks are due to all the many helpers.

Our Junior Girls’ team has beenmade up of various combinations of Emily Dinnis, Alice Rogers, Morwenna Matcham, Anna and Nicole Harding, Sarah Turner, Morwenna Moore and Sarah Ham. We won the Devonand Somerset and Dartmoor Triathlons, came 2nd at our own competition and 3rd at Spooners. The Mini Girls: variously Harriet Mitchell, Martha Scott, Amy Bennallick, Tess Masselink, Poppy Tank, Phoebe Ham and Olivia Hutchings won at Devon and Somerset, Dartmoor and East Cornwall and were 2nd at Eggesford. Some competitions have mixed class teams which is much more complicated and unpredictable – however at the Fourburrow Tri Anna, Emily and Sooz came 5th, but were beaten into 8th place in the Tet by Nicole, Olly Dinnis and Bexy Dew who came 7th (out of about 30 teams!) Unfortunately we don’t have enough boys or senior girls to field complete teams, but Alex and Biz Moore put in some good individual performances before disappearing to do other things!

Three competitors from East Cornwall were among the 250 from all over the South of England, Midlands and Wales who entered the Inter Area Tetrathlon run by Area 15/16 at Stockland Lovell. As well as being a very strongly fought competition it is a great social event, which forges strong bonds between members from all the branches in our area. It is also often a memorable feat of extreme camping (and 30 a side rugby) This year was no exception, with tents threatening to take off in gale force winds on Monday night and a wet start to Wednesday, although thankfully without last year’s floods when several new water features appeared on the cross country course overnight!

Harriet Mitchell, Emily Dinnis and Sooz Kellagher were all selected for the Area 16 teams in Minis, Juniors and Open respectively. All three put in solid performances in the shoot, swim and run, but all were most pleased by their ride phases in which Harriet and Emily both went clear over a very substantial 2’6 and 3’ courses, and Sooz had one stop and an “L” over the BE Novice track, much of which was almost as big as her pony. Harriet’s team was 3rd and she was also placed 3rd individually, Emily’s team was 2nd and Sooz’s 4th and she was highest placed Area 16 competitor. Sooz has been selected for the South West team to go to the UK Regionals in Scotland.

There are still a few more Tetrathlons to come so watch this space…………. And if anyone is keen to give it a go, it’s probably a bit late for this season but it’s never to soon to start practising shooting for the next! We’d love to hear from you. Mandy Kellagher

Summer Camps 2009

JUNIOR CAMP

Sat 8th August-Tues 11th August

INTERMEDIATE CAMP

Wed 12th August-Sat 15th August

As we all remember last summer was rather damp! It worked really well having two camps instead of one, as there was more room for the children and the ponies. Therefore we will run two camps again but hopefully the weather will be better.

Junior camp is for the younger and new members and Intermediate camp is for the older members. Members 11 years and under should attend junior camp and those 14 years and over should attend intermediate camp. 12 and 13 year olds can attend either camp. If you are unsure which camp you should attend please ring me.

Members who have attended Pony Club activities during the year will be given priority for a place at camp. Numbers will be limited.

The children will sleep in large tents. If anyone has a tent they could lend for the camps please let me know.

The ponies will be tied in stalls so it is important that your pony is suitable tobe tied up at all times. They must be 5 years or over and able to work in a school with others, just as in a Pony Club rally situation.

Help is always needed at camp and we like a parent/friend of each member attending a camp to help either during one day or night. Please mark on the form what days/nights you may be able to help and I will make up a rota nearer the time.

If you would like to book a place at camp please fill in the application form and medical form and return them to me
