The RCGP has just released its 5th edition of the Essential Knowledge Update Programme (EKU5) and you are invited to take part in this vital tool to help you realise your CPD and Revalidation commitments

This new e-learning module consists of 8 major topics and 20 briefings focusing on new and changing information that relate to key clinical areas of national significance that have been prioritised from a search spanning June to November 2009.

The following topics are covered in Essential Knowledge Update 5:

  1. Emergency management of anaphylaxis in children and young people
  2. When to suspect child maltreatment
  3. Management of STIs & related conditions in children & young people
  4. Treatment and management of depression in adults
  5. Impaired glucose regulation (IGR)/ Non-diabetic hyperglycaemia (NDH)/ Pre-diabetes
  6. Diagnosis and management of syncope (version 2009)
  7. Management of community acquired pneumonia in adults
  8. Management of Asthma

To find out, take the new RCGP Essential Knowledge Challenge (EKC 4) – an engaging online test of the latest knowledge in general practice.

Each Essential Knowledge Challenge consists of 50 multiple choice questions based on its accompanying Essential Knowledge Update. EKC 4 is based on the content of the 4th edition of the Essential Knowledge Updates.

The question format includes Single Best Answer, Extended Matching Questions, Clinical Photograph and Statistical Graph interpretation as well as clinical algorithm flow charts. If you score 70% or more, you will be able to print out a certificate to add to your appraisal folder.If you need to, you can make repeated attempts until you successfully complete the test.

Revalidation and Continuing Professional Development

It is acknowledged within the currentRevalidation Guidethat the Essential Knowledge Updates and Challenges are an acceptable tool to help demonstrate that a GP is updating their knowledge. Through participating in the Essential Knowledge Challenge and by studying the associated modules in the corresponding Knowledge Update, GPs will be able to award themselves credits under the planned RCGP CPD credit system.

How to access the Essential Knowledge Updates and Challenges?

RCGP Members

The Essential Knowledge Updates are FREE to all RCGP members, as part of the College membership benefit package. Associates in Training who have a reference number are also classed as RCGP Members.
