The New Holland W230C is a Natural Choice for Rand

Turin, 15 December 2013

Hertfordshire based Rand brothers have taken delivery of a New Holland W230C Wheel Loader, which is helping to improve productivity and reduce fuel costs.

The W230C which benefits from SCR Technology and ECOSHIFT transmission has also been fitted with a specially constructed 7 tonne hi-tip bucket (8.2 cu m). The machine which was supplied by New Holland dealer Ernest Doe, is being used to handle up to 100,000 tonnes of grain at Rand’s farms storage facility at Hatchpen near Royston.

Although an agricultural application, the sheer size of the grain facility meant industrial size equipment was needed to handle the grain quickly and efficiently. Usually more associated with construction applications, the W230C wheel loader is proving to be the ideal solution as far as Rand is concerned.

New Holland wheel loaders are equipped with host of advanced engineering features. The rear mounted engine and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology means the engine combustion is optimised for efficiency as well as delivering increased power, resulting in a reduction of up to 15% in fuel consumption. The ECOSHIFT transmission system has a 5-speed torque converter with a lock-up auto or manually activated, from 7 km/h up to 40 km/h. This minimizes losses during travel and uses engine de-rating to make each gearshift smoother. Its power Inch declutching system gives you the accuracy of a hydrostatic transmission while keeping the pushing power of a torque converter.

The W230C also incorporates a unique cooling design system. The radiators are placed forming a box rather than the traditional approach of having them overlapped. This cleverly designed system ensures maximum cooling efficiency and makes it easy to clean. The combination of all these design features results in significant savings on maintenance and helps to reduce overall ownership costs, a key consideration for customers investing in new machinery.

David Rand, one of the partners in the business, explained the reasons for choosing a New Holland wheel loader over a more traditional telehandler option. “It became obvious to us, that once we were storing more than 50,000 tonnes of material, telehandlers were struggling to cope with our volume of work. When we reached a capacity of 100,000 tonnes we were having to hire in three extra telehandlers at busy periods, so the search for an industrial solution was embarked upon. Demonstrations of several machines from different manufacturers were arranged and Rob Freestone from Ernest Doe arranged for us to test several New Holland machines to see which one best suited our needs.”

“One of our key requirements was to be able to fill a 29 tonne lorry in 5 or 6 cycles. So we opted for a W230C with a specially designed hi-tip bucket. This gave us the capacity we were looking for in a machine that could be manoeuvred easily and offered the operator visibility he needed.”

Buying a wheel loader of this type was new territory for Rand Brothers. Previous experience of hiring a loader shovel led them to decide it was a necessary piece of equipment for their business.

“Once we knew the model could fulfil our requirements, there were a number of key features that really sold the W230C to us, a key one being the smoothness of hydrostatic transmission,” said David Rand. “You can move from forward to reverse without any jerking. This means we don’t spill any grain from the bucket and as we are in the food industry, grain spillages, especially outdoors, are something we need to avoid. Rob told us what the machine was capable of doing and I am pleased to say that the W230C and the bucket matched our expectations 100%. It does everything we wanted it to do and it’s very rare that you can say that. We took delivery in May and I have absolutely no criticisms. We thought it would be good on fuel consumption and we are more than delighted to say that the W230C is achieving 13 litres per hour.”

Operator safety and comfort are key elements on New Holland machines The W230C provides reinforced cab guaranteed protection against rollover (ROPS) and falling objects (FOPS). Having the engine at the rear means less vibration in the cab and the ECOSHIFT transmission electronically optimises gear shifts according to the working mode selected, ensuring smooth shifting, something which was a major selling point for Rand

Mr Rand added “The ergonomics in the cab are very good, the cab is laid out so well that it is very easy to drive. It is incredibly stable too – no rocking or bucking and the transmission is so smooth. Any sensible driver can drive it. However, as part of the sales package, New Holland Construction provided training for four drivers and we felt this was a sensible thing to arrange.”

At times, working the grain in the stores means the production of dust in the atmosphere. The W230C has a special radar detection system mounted on the rear of the machine. The equipment alerts the operator to any obstacles or people who may be obscured from vision and informs him of their approximate position. This feature is seen as being of paramount importance in the safe operation of the machine.
