European Race Audit Briefing Paper no.2: Feb 2010

http://www.irr.org.uk/pdf2/ERA_BriefingPaper2.pdf

(Source: Institute of Race Relations Weekly Digest, 19 February)

“How can governments encourage more of the population to get involved in the democratic process? This is the question currently on the lips of politicians and civil servants across Europe …” [p1]

This paper then goes on to examine what happens if more people do get involved – but bring with them discriminatory views, anti-immigration lobbies, etc. As the paper concludes those in power and those in liberal pressure groups “… need to note the ways in which the extreme-Right and anti-immigrant electoral parties have manipulated people’s power to bring about xenophobic outcomes and institutionalise racism and discrimination – and the consequences of this process in terms of the rise of ‘hate crimes’.” [p9]

The ERA has also just published their Briefing Paper no.1, The Swiss referendum on minarets: background and aftermath – see: http://www.irr.org.uk/pdf2/ERA_BriefingPaper1.pdf.
