  • “I Wanna Be Just Like You Dad!” – The Father’s Role in Rearing Godly Children

Session Four:

“Strive to learn, love, and live Jesus”
From the story of God the Father and Jesus

The Narrative with Observations:

  • Jesus demonstrated as young man His desire to do the THINGSof God (Luke 2:41-52).

─Jesus desired to grow in wisdom and insight in the things of the Lord.

─Jesus was devoted to honoring God and following His desires.

─Jesus obeyed the authority over him, even though they were imperfect.

  • Jesus lived in full OBEDIENCEto His Father (John 4:34; 5:30; 6:38; 14:31; 15:10).

─Jesus desired to do everything God wanted Him to do – motivated by love.

─Jesus refers to His desires as they pertain to God’s desires as His will and God’s will.

─Jesus obeyed God and challenges each of us to obey Him (cf. John 14:21).

  • Jesus always spoke what was CONSISTENTwith what His Father desired
    (John 8:26; 49-50).

─Jesus never spoke a word without careful thought and purpose.

─Jesus understood what the Father wanted and spoke consistent with it.

  • Jesus always desired to do WHATEVERit was that God wanted
    (Matthew 26:39, 42).

─Jesus prayed for God’s will to be done, even in His own death (cf., Hebrews 10:7).

─Jesus demonstrated true righteousness (cf., Hebrews 5:8).

  • Jesus did what He DIDGod do (John 5:19).

─Jesus had an eye on what His Father did.

─Jesus imitated His Father.

  • Jesus lived in complete HUMILITY(Philippians 2:5-11).

─Jesus now provides us help as we seek to live like Him (cf., Hebrews 4:15-16).

─Jesus determined it was better to honor God than anything else (cf., Hebrews 12:2).

Observations:

  • Young men, seek to learn, understand, and IMPLEMENTthe things of the Lord.
    Fathers, PROVIDEyour young son(s) these opportunities.
  • Young men, seek to understand and obey EVERYTHINGthe Lord commands.

Fathers, help your children understand the Father’s will. Make sure you DIFFERENTIATEbetween God’s desires and your preferences.

  • Young men, SPEAKthose things that are consistent with God’s purposes and plans.
    Fathers, help your children by teaching them TRUTH(what the Father says) and living before them as an example.
  • Young men, strive to IMMITATEJesus Christ in everything (cf., Ephesians 5:1-2).
    Fathers, go BEFOREthem imitating Jesus.
  • Young men, Jesus offers you EVERYTHINGyou need to live for Him
    (cf. 2 Peter 1:2-11).
    Fathers, help you sons SEEJesus through His Word and your example.
  • Young men and Fathers, LOVEJesus and live for Him.
