The Third World Centre (TWC), Aberdeen : The Montgomery Development Education Centre

Due to successful additional funding being won in 2014 by the six Scottish Development Education Centres, from the Scottish Government, to develop both their services and capacity,

the Montgomery Development Education Centre (MDEC) wishes to appoint

One Full-time or Two Part-time officersto join our small, committed team of staff.

Our well-established and respected education centre, based in Aberdeen and serving the NE of Scotlandspecialises in working with educationalists, training teachers and resourcing schools for all aspects of Global Educationand Learning for Sustainability.

The aims of our Scottish Government grant and new funded post/sare to enable the Montgomery Centre todevelop and deliver the two following remits:

Supporting both a) and b) above post holder/s will also:

Work collaboratively as part of the supportive DEC Consortium in Scotland (6 independent global learning centres) developing and providing global learning expertise and building capacity and stronger relationships with local and national education bodies – this is in line with our undertaking through this Scottish Government funding.

We envisage these two areas of work, either being delivered by

One full-time person,or by

Two part-time persons.

If being undertaken by two part-time persons, while aspects from all of the above will be involved in both posts, we would see one person focusing on area a) GLOBAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME and the other focusing on area b)ORGANISATION CAPACITY, PROJECTS and FUNDING SOURCES

Principal tasks within remit a) GLOBAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMEwill be to:

  1. Extend and build on the MDEC’s range of professional development courses for teachers, linking global learning / global citizenship / Learning for Sustainability to the Curriculum for Excellence.
  2. Deliver these professional development courses to individual teachers, whole schools and school clusters across the NE through a range of activities including in-service and twilight sessions, to cluster groups and at symposia and conferences.
  3. Develop a specific Fair Trade professional learning and practice course and promote the Fair Trade Schools Award in the NE, liaising with FT steering groups and members.
  4. Develop a close working relationship with Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Shetland Council Education Departments, curriculum support staff, and key teachers and schools.
  5. Attendmeetings of the DEC Consortium of Scotland plus some national meetings and play an active part incontributing toand developing global learningactivities with fellow members and reporting progress to the Scottish Government, in line with our funding undertaking.

Alongside these will be associated tasks (taken from below) to:

  1. Identify, recruit and enable experienced teachers to support and mentor others through the establishment of networks and mentoring groups.
  2. Provide resource advice and facilitate the use of the library by teachers.
  3. Help to produce email newsletters, promote teaching resources and learning activities, and make direct contact with educators.
  4. Ensure all associated administrative and financial activities linked to allocated responsibilities are achieved on time and to the standard required to honour our funding.
  5. Write reports and promotional documents.
  6. Attend and input to national education meetings and development groups.
  7. Engage with MDEC management to ensure effective delivery of current commitments and input to the development of future activities / projects.
  8. Conduct any other duties as required within the scope of the post.

Principal tasks within remit b) ORGANISATION CAPACITY, PROJECTS and FUNDING SOURCESwill be to:

  1. Assess the development needs of the MDEC in order to build the capacity of and security for the organisation, in order to maintain and support its continuing growth
  2. Work with management and staff to address these needs
  3. Be responsible for developing, nurturing and managing positive relationships with new partners
  4. Identify, prioritise, prepare, submit and secure funding to ensure the development of the MDEC’s work and help shape a robust funding strategy for the MDEC
  5. Accurately record and monitor the submission of funding bids
  6. Act as an ambassador for the charity at appropriate events, raising its profile in the region.
  7. Be aware of and ensure the MDEC complies with all relevant legislation and procedures

Alongside these will be associated tasks (taken from below) to:

  1. Attend all relevant meetings of the DEC Consortium of Scotland and play an active part in contributing to and developing activities with fellow members and reporting progress to the Scottish Government, in line with our funding undertaking
  2. Ensure all associated administrative and financial activities linked to allocated responsibilities are achieved on time and to the standard required to honour our funding.
  3. Write reports and promotional documents.
  4. Engage with MDEC management to ensure effective delivery of all post commitments
  5. Conduct any other duties as required within the scope of the post.

As further funding is obtained, there will be the opportunity for staff to develop the range of activities undertaken and, accordingly, the responsibilities held.

Mode of working

Within your work, you will be required to:

  • Ensure the confidentiality of databases and of other aspects of MDEC’s work
  • Work in a manner that reflects the interests and values of the MDEC and supports the objectives of the MDEC and TWC.
  • Follow TWC/MDEC procedures and policies such as data protection, the equal opportunities policy, and the health and safety policy.
  • Complete a Disclosure Scotland check if needed.

Experience and qualities

You should have a range of essential and highly desirable experiences, abilities and attitudes as set out below.

For both remits

  • Understand and be committed to global justice issues such as human rights, sustainable development and fair trade.
  • Possess good IT skills and have experience of using the internet, email and Microsoft Office software packages.
  • Be able to plan and deliver your work so as to achieve the MDEC goals and meet deadlines.
  • Be able to evaluate and report on impact of project and other activities.
  • Be able to work creatively.
  • Be able to manage multiple tasks.
  • Possess a flexible approach to work.
  • Be able to work both independently and within a team.
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Have access to a car and hold a full driving licence to enable travel across the NE Scotland
  • Have experience within the voluntary sector.

For remit a) GLOBAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME

  • Have experience of the design and delivery of training sessions and interactive workshops for adults or young people in a school or out-of-school environment – ideally using participative methodologies.
  • Be able to relate well to teachers and to education staff.
  • Have experience, knowledge and understanding of the Scottish School Education System
  • Ideally have some project management experience

For remit b)ORGANISATION CAPACITY, PROJECTS and FUNDING SOURCES

  • Have organisation development experience, working with the different members of an organisation e.g. staff, management and volunteers, to build capacity and sustainability
  • Be experienced in researching, developing, producing and submitting compelling,successful funding applications of excellent quality.
  • Have an ability to develop and maintain excellent relationships with a range of partners.
  • Have project management experience

The Montgomery Development Education Centre

The Montgomery Development Education Centre (MDEC) is the education section of the organisation: The Third World Centre, which was Aberdeen's original Fair Trade retailer and which remains committed to fair trade and other global justice issues.

The Third World Centreis a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Scottish Charity Number SC014585) with the purpose of educating and enabling people in the North East of Scotland to take action to create a fairer world.

To help achieve this purpose the MDEC was set up in 1983 to focus on undertaking and developing Education for Global Citizenship / Development Education / Learning for Sustainability within both formal and non-formal education.

Learning for Sustainability is learning to live within the environmental limits of our planet and to build a just, equitable and peaceful society. It is essential to the well-being of all and is an international priority. (UNESCO, 2013)

Development Education and Education for Global Citizenship are the processes that foster the knowledge, skills and attitudes which promote justice and equality in a multicultural society and inter-dependent world.

The MDEC is also a member of the International Development Education Association of Scotland (IDEAS) – see - a network of around 16 organisations and individuals that are involved in Development Education and Education for Global Citizenship across Scotland. As a member,the MDEC is involved in developing national global citizenship initiatives and projects to support and enable local activities.

In addition to this/these new post/s there are three other employed staff based in the MDEC office:

  • A Senior Education Officerwho is in overall charge of the work undertaken by the Centre
  • A further Schools Global Learning Co-ordinator
  • An Administrative Officer who provides administrative and general support for the work of the centre and staff.

Conditions of engagement

You will be employed by the Third World Centre to work principally on the allocated activities funded through the MDEC’s Scottish Government grant.

Length of contract

The Global EducationProgrammeduration of employment through this funding is expected to last until the end of February or March 2016, in line withourScottish Government grant received.

The Organisation Capacity, Projects and Funding Sources remit will be offered as a separate fixed term remit within this period of time which may be of shorter duration.

Salary, start date etc.

The post/s are available starting from 1st September or end of August onwards, allowing for any notice requirements to a current employer/s.

The salary payable will depend on the range of experience being offered and the job remit/s being undertaken.

Please note: as the MDEC will be actively looking for further funding sources during this time span it is anticipated further employment opportunity for the right candidate/s may be available thereafter.

Actual days and times of work will be negotiated but are required to remain flexible within the hours of 8.30am – 6.30pm to allow for after-school teacher training sessions and management and other meetings.

Many of the teacher training activities will happen during term-time,thus allowing some additional space for flexibility within the Global Education section.

You will havesix weeks pro rata paid holiday.

You will be responsible toSusan Jenkins, Senior Education Officer, The Montgomery Development Education Centre.

Location of post/s

You will be based at the MDEC office, 79 Queen Street, Aberdeen, AB10 1AN.

Within the Global Education remit you will also need to be able to work at schools and education offices within Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. Very occasional visits to Moray, Shetland and Orkney may also be required.

Within the Organisation Capacity, Projects and Funding Sources remit you will also need to be able to visit and work with other NE organisations and bodies.

For approved local NE car journeys a mileage allowance will be payable which is currently 40p per mile.

Both remits will include travel elsewhere in Scotland - e.g. to Perth orthe central belt for development meetings and events. These trips are usually by public transport.
