The Men’s Room Residencies Brief – Lead Artist

The Mens' Room is an arts and social care agency. We aim to work creatively with men and offer them opportunities to be involved in high quality artistic projects alongside providing support for issues that they may have in their lives. The Men's Room run two creative sessions weekly, ‘The Red Room’ (for young men between the ages of 18 and 30 who have experience of the criminal justice system and/or homelessness) and ‘The Blue Room’ (for young men between the ages of 18 and 30 who have experience of street based sex work).

The Men’s Room has secured funding from the Arts Council for artistic residencies and support for emerging artists in this field. The objectives of these residencies is to develop four consistent artistic interventions, alongside The Men’s Room core practice, and to support an emerging artist through the process. We envisage four 6 month residencies (from February 2014), with 4 separate Lead Artists who have the experience to work alongside the target groups. Each residency will culminate in a final product.

The residencies will require a commitment to:

-Deliver 2 sessions per week within the six month period.

-Alongside the Project Manager provide a time table of delivery and workshop plans.

-Alongside the Project Manager, support the mentoring of an emerging practitioner

-Attend training.

-Attend project meetings.

-Reflective learning.

-Monitor, evaluate and document personal process to be submitted as part of the project evaluation report.

-Support the delivery of the final Event.

-Adhere to the Men’s Room policy and proceedure.

The total fee available will be £4000; in addition we will provide you with a standard DBS check, a training package with TIPP and the opportunity to share your knowledge and skill set with an emerging artist in a supported way. You will also have the opportunity, as the Lead Artist, to explore your creativity and hone your delivery skills in a very challenging environment. The sessions will be delivered in and around the City Centre.

If you are interested in this exciting opportunity we would appreciate a short Expression of Interest (no more than one side of A4) from lead artists.

These should include:

-Experience of working with the group

-Three brief ideas for residency content (to be discussed with group members at a later date)

-Availability February 2014 – February 2016

-We are particularly interested in artists working within social media, web design, computer based graphics, film production, music production, writing and drama/performance for the first 2 residencies.

-However feel free to apply, as we will hold your information for year two, if your skills are in other art forms.

Any artists who undertake the residency will be required to have Public Liability Insurance and a curent DBS check in place.

If you are interested in undertaking a residency, please send an Expression of Interest to and by 5pm on Monday 10th February 2014 and we will contact the short listed candidates for an interview slot on Wednesday 19th February 2014.
