THE Mccallum FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

The McCallum Family Scholarship is given in memory of a Scottish immigrant family and it is a tangible way of saying “Thank you, America.”

The immigrants James McCallum and Janet McKerral McCallum sailed from Scotland for America on their wedding day. Archie McCallum, James’ unwed, illiterate brother also accompanied them. Bound together by love, faith and a promise of a better life in the New World, they signed on as indentured servants, through the Scottish Presbyterian Church, working two years to pay off their passage and an additional two years to pay their passage westward. At that time the farm servant’s social and economic status was equivalent to that of a hired sharecropper in the United States. It was a lifestyle close to serfdom.

The family homesteaded in Larene, Washington, approximately eight miles north of Davenport. The picture above is of the homestead area, with grandson Barney McCallum in the foreground.

The Barney McCallum and family make this McCallum Family Scholarship possible for use today, and into perpetuity. The criteria include, but not limited to financial need, personal achievement, and a demonstrated commitment to education.
