A Word from Mr. M

Well, I’m glad THAT is over! I am very happy to report that everyone survived the Milestone testing, or as one parent aptly characterized it, “The Milestone Death March.” That had to be the longest seven days (or daze) many of your children have ever survived! I tried to punctuate it with lots of extra recess and some fun activities as we plodded through. And everyone seemed to try to do their absolute best. As I was “patrolling” I saw many previewing the test sections before starting, many reading the questions following a reading piece before they actually read the piece, many making mini-graphic organizers before they attempted to write their answers on the extended response questions, many working diligently and using almost every minute to go back and check their work before finally closing the test booklet. Yes, many of the class worked very hard for you and me, and I am sure the results for these students will show their dedication and diligent effort.

Mr. Sophisticate

The spelling work was sophisticated and I was struggling to explain exactly what that word meant when this happened. And from then on Mr. A. S. was known as Mr. Sophisticate. And I want to tell you he really is the embodiment of that word. A. is calm, suave, cool under stress, and always the gentleman. Now, I know his parents may be a little shocked at this news, but this is the A. I see every day in class. So, Sean Connery and Daniel Craig be aware, your competition is on the horizon!

Our Upcoming Career Days (see the Website – Special Projects – for criteria)

As you see from the calendar below we have two Career Days coming up. This is mandated by the State as part of an overall effort to prepare children for Career Readiness and we in elementary are honored to help the children take those first steps. On Monday, May 15th, Mr. Flaherty and a parent from each of the seven fifth grades will come and talk to the students about their professions. Then on Tuesday, May 16th, each child will present their report that they wrote in Ms. Frey’s computer lab and their trifold board that they made at home on their chosen profession. This will be an exciting, dress nicely day and all the grade levels are invited to come and talk with the fifth grade about their chosen life’s ambition. So, now that testing is in the rear view mirror, if we have not started thinking about the trifold boards, let’s all start today!

Another Wonderful Performance

Last week I was invited to hear the Impact Singers perform, and I wish you all could have heard them sing America and our National Anthem. While I was not able to hear them perform at the Braves baseball game, I know the crowd had to have been stirred as I was. Thank you Ms. K. G. and Mr. G. F. for lifting my soul and thank you Ms. Gardner for all your hard work!

Maverick Moment

Every year I share the Eleven Rules for Being Human. When the eleventh rule is shared, the class will be on the threshold of going off to middle school. The Tenth Rule is particularly haunting.

Rule Number 10: “You will forget all of this.”

And as the “Some Dates to Remember” shorten, we only have only one rule left after this one.
