  1. Position overview

The management accounting function of the Finance Branch is a critical component of the Institute’s governance and financial risk management structure. The Management Accountant assists with tasks associated with the development, administration and monitoring of the Institute’s budget. The growth in the Institute’s project based work with numerous organisations/partners has placed both a higher demand for management accounting services (including increased costing work) and a greater need for the development and implementation of a robust monthly financial management reporting framework. This framework will enhance the Institute’s ability to identify and mitigate financial risks in a timely manner.

  2. Assist with the development, administration, monitoring and support of the Institute’s budget and monthly financial reporting processesthat includes the preparation of decision making focused management reports.
  3. Liaise with Faculties/Schools/Divisions on resources and budget issues, and assist with the identification and mitigation of financial risks.
  4. Provide support to Divisions to ensure all new proposals are fully costed and financial risks are clearly identified.
  5. Provide support to the Financial & Management Accounting team to assist them to the fulfilment of the Institute’s reporting responsibilities within required timeframes.
  6. Provide advice, reports and information to Management and Divisions in relation to their management and monitoring of their budgets and any financial issues. The development, monitoring and ongoing maintenance of the Institute’s revenue and expenditure budgets.

  8. Essential selection criteria
  9. Thorough understanding of financial issues particularly related to the management of programs and budget management support services to internal and external stakeholders.
  10. Demonstrated experience in working effectively in a customer focused environment, and with others in a culturally diverse team, as well as being able to operate independently of direct supervision,
  11. consulting or liaising with stakeholders to prepare budgets and forward estimates for all of the Institute’s revenue and expenditure,
  12. analysis and interpretation of financial data to assist with the preparation of decision making focused management reports,
  13. investigation, research, planning and problem solving skills in a multi-faceted environment,
  14. using accounting systems (GAS or similar) and capacity to learn business reporting tools (i.e. Business Objects or similar),
  15. MS Office Suite of software applications including being a Power user of MS Excel
  16. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others on projects to ensure that the Institute’s financial objectives are achieved,
  17. excellent written and oral communications skills, including the ability to provide financial & budget leadership to finance and institute staff.
  18. Ability to conduct meetings, set goals and priorities, delegate tasks and engender a customer service focus with our internal clients, while working in a team environment
  19. Desirable selection criteria
  20. Tertiary qualification in finance, accounting or a related field, together with relevant management accounting experience.
  21. Experience working in the education sector, preferably in the Higher Education Sector or other large/complex entity.
