An open place with a few tress on the left. Some hay in a corner.

Once upon a time there was a big Father Elephant. He lived at Whipsnade Zoo near London with Mother Elephant and their little son whose name was Yalmar. Watch the play and [you'll see what happened.

The Story-teller goes off, Father Elephant appears, stops in the (middle of the stage, thinks for some time then stands on his head. Mother Elephant enters.

(in surprise). How funny you are! (Goes up to him.) What are you doing?

(sadly) I..I am trying to remember something

Yalmar! Yalmar! Were are you? Come here

(runs in). What do you want, Mother dear?

(greatly excited). Run along, Yalmar, and find out what your father has forgotten.

She goes off. Yalmar begins to walk up and down the stage very slowly. Then he stops near the trees and sits down under

one of them.

I don't know where to find what my father has forgotten.

Soon he hears the sound of crying. He gets up and looks around. He tries to find out who is crying, but sees nobody. He walks around the tree and sees some little traces. He walks around those traces, but he doesn't see anybody.

Who are you? I don’t see you.

(There is a voice from behind. «I'm a lost birthday | and I don't know who I belong to» ).

(There is a voice from behind: «Of course! There's always a birthday cake on birthday. This one's got six candles. Someone's six today» ).

(to the audience). How nice to be six. That's a very nice age. Almost as nice as being seven. Five is nice too: and so is four. And as for eight, well, when you are eight you'll need only eight or perhaps ten more years and you'll be grown-up. Still, I think I'd like best to be six (To the voice.) Oh! Poor lost birthday! What can I do for you?

Oh, dear! That’s sad.(then he asks suddenly) Is there a birthday cake?

There is a voice from behind : “Please, help me to find whose I am! Maybe someone is crying now but I don’t know who and I can’t go to him”

But how can I help you? (Hethinksforaminute.)Oh!!!I know , in our forest we have a very old and a very clever owl. Her name is Pampushka. She knows everything! I'll go to her and ask her. And you (hesaystothevoice)stop crying and wait for me.

Yalmar goes off. Father Elephant appears, stops in the middle of the stage, thinks for some minutes and then he hears the sound of crying. He listens for some time.
