Research Team Leadership: ‘Leading Researchers’ Workshop

Objective: The overall objective of the workshop is to provide a forum for the sharing of good practice about the skills required to lead and manage major research projects. More specifically the workshop aims to explore issues such as;

The nature of leadership and management in a highly focused research environment.

The role of the principal investigator and senior researcher as project leader.

How to deal with challenging people and leadership issues, again in a research based context.

How to support very high performers, and

How to better understand the team dynamics which occur in a research team and how to gain further self insight to enable these to be addressed.

Facilitator Biographical Details

Dr Tom Kennie

Tom Kennie is a founding director of the Ranmore Consulting Group. He works with a range of knowledge based organisations particularly in higher education and also in the professional service sector (e.g. firms of chartered surveyors, lawyers and software companies). For the past 7 years he has been co-programme director of the Top Management Programme for HE run by the Leadership Foundation for HE. He has experience of working with over 30 HE institutions and has been working with groups at the Institute over the past 3-4 years.

Prior to moving into consultancy 11 years ago he was Director of Human Resources for DTZ Debenham Thorpe, an international firm of property advisors and before this Head of Training and Development activities for Balfour Beatty an international engineering company.

He has also been a full-time academic spending 8 years as Head of Surveying in the School of Engineering at the University of Surrey and 4 years at the University of Technology in Kingston, Jamaica. In his earlier career he worked as a chartered surveyor.

Tom originally studied geography and topographic sciences at the University of Glasgow, obtained his PhD from ImperialCollege, London and an MBA from Roffey Park Management Institute, University of Sussex. He is qualified as a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS), the Institute of Personnel and Development (MIPD) and the Institute of Management Consulting (Certified Management Consultant (CMC)). He is a Visiting Professor at NottinghamBusinessSchool and is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology, Sydney. He is also a Non-Executive Adviser to the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education.
