The school is a Roman Catholic academy in the trusteeship of the Fathers of The Oratory, London. There are 1330 pupils, 80 boys aged 7 to 10 in the Junior House receiving a specialist music education, 910 boys aged 11 to 16 in the first to fifth forms and 340 in the sixth form, including 90 girls.

Applications are invited for the post of Design and Technology Technician.

The London Oratory School is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and hardworking Design and Technology Technician to support staff and pupils in the preparation and delivery of the Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5 curriculum for Design and Technology. The applicant should be organised and methodical in their approach and have the ability to work without constant supervision. The successful candidate will have the ability to multi-task, have an impressive talent for problem solving and enthusiasm for supporting the delivery of Design and Technology teaching.

The Design and Technology Technician will be responsible for providing full technical support to the Design and Technology Department and ensuring high standards of Health and Safety are maintained whilst assisting in the day-to-day support of the learning environment. The Technician will work with the Head of Design and Technology to promote excellence in the teaching of Design and Technology.

Terms of the engagement

The appointment is subject to the provisions of the Handbook for Non-teaching Staff.

The standard hours of the post are 37.5 hours a week (excluding a one hour mid-day break each day) from 8am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. However, the post holder will be expected to work such additional hours as may be necessary and reasonable to enable him or her to discharge effectively his or her duties. No additional payment will be made for overtime or irregular hours. The annual leave entitlement is 25 working days (excluding public and bank holidays), to be taken at times agreed by the Procurator. The holiday year starts on 1st April.

A candidate not wishing to work all year round, but who would like to work on an extended term time basis (i.e. term time, plus some school holiday time) on a reduced salary, would be considered. Equally a candidate not able to work 37.5 hours per week in term time would also be considered.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT
At present there are the equivalent of three full-time posts in the Technology Department and a full-time technician for Design & Technology. The department’s accommodation consists of three general resistant material workshops, each with an emphasis on Wood and Machining, Metal and Engineering, and Plastics and CAD CAM. Recent investments include a new Forge/Heat treatment area and a laser-cutter.
Junior House (Key Stage 2) (boys aged 7 to 11)
Design and Technology is taught for one double period a week. There is a clearly structured, yet flexible scheme of work that leads naturally into KS3.

First, Second and Third Form (Key Stage 3)

The Design and Technology Department and Art Department work together to teach units of work under the umbrella of Art, Design and Technology (ADT). This is taught for two double periods a week. Work follows a modular pattern and explores themes in both two and three-dimensions. Teachers in the Technology Department lead pupils in focused practical activities in a range of resistant materials.

Fourth and Fifth-Form (Key Stage 4)

On average about 30 boys, in each year, study Design and Technology to GCSE level. The department follows the Resistant Materials AQA syllabus. Pupils are encouraged to work in a variety of materials and to a range of briefs for their Controlled Assessment projects.

Sixth-Form

The department follows the AQA specification in Product Design. The group averages about 6 pupils, which enables a variety of teaching processes and experiences. Pupils produce a range of outcomes to their coursework in Lower Sixth including sustainable designs for laser cut MP3 amplifiers, finely crafted silver-smithing and ergonomic projects. Upper sixth projects enable pupils to choose their briefs and can be ambitious in scale.
The department places a strong emphasis on teaching and learning through practical activity. Teachers encourage pupils to be discerning in their use of tools and materials and take responsibility for their work.
Summary of the role:
1  To support the academic staff within the Design and Technology Department in their work with pupils across all key stages of the curriculum as directed by the Head of Department.
2  To co-ordinate the preparation of materials and machinery in good time for classroom activities to take place in the allocated timeframe.
3  To ensure the working environment within the Design and Technology Department remains safe and in line with Health and Safety legislation and school and departmental policies.
The responsibilities and duties of the post:
1  Assist with the implementation of the health and safety policy at the direction of the Head of Department to ensure the provision of a safe working environment for students at all times.
2  To set up equipment, tools and materials for specific lessons as directed by the department staff in a timely manner.
3  Organise tools and equipment, ensuring tools are racked and labelled correctly.
4  Place and receive orders at the direction of the Head of Department in an orderly and timely manner, and advise the Head of Department of any stock requirements in good time.
5  Undertake daily and weekly maintenance checks of tools, equipment & machinery, cleaning, oiling and changing or re-setting blades as and when required. Remove dust from extraction units. Ensure that regular maintenance and servicing of equipment is undertaken by suitably qualified specialists in a timely manner. Consider the recommendations consequent on such visits.
6  Maintain and keep log sheets in respect of same for monitoring purposes.
7  To provide technical assistance and support during lessons as directed by the class teacher and with guidance on the level of assistance required.
8  To notify the Head of Department of any health and safety issues or concerns.
9  To demonstrate and supervise the operation of specialist equipment to pupils within the workshop and oversee their use either in small groups or on an individual basis.
10  Participating in the maintenance and assessment of health and safety standards, and security in relation to the technician service to the Science Department in accordance with school policy.
11  Other appropriate technical duties as directed by the Head of Design and Technology.
