Identify details in a song or text

ARTISTIC AIM:

Students will respond to the song Locomotion, incorporating specific dance choreography in a creative way.

LITERACY/ MATH/ OR SUBJECT AREA AIM:

Students will identify specific details (instructions) and be able to create a dance from them.

Motivation:

Tell the story of Little Eva.

MATERIALS:

CD of song, sheets of paper with lyrics, pencils

Procedure:

CALL out- For Attendance, each students calls out his/her favorite ice cream flavor.

MINDFULNESS ACTIVITY--- Put them on an imaginary beach. When they are in a state of mindfulness, get them to listen to all different types of snippets songs with or without their eyes closed. Then they should think one word, or adjective describing that song. After that. Play the songs again and have them raise their hands on how it made them feel.

·  PLAY THE LOCOMOTION SONG and ask them to listen and imagine how they would do it,

·  Listen again for certain things and have them point out patterns or directions

·  Hand out the song and ask them to underline all the directions- then go through the song and write them on the board.

·  Get them up in a circle, stretch them and dance to the song once.

·  They must incorporate all the things written on the board in their dance.

·  Split them into groups and tell them they are going to perform for each other. They should also come up with a name for their group, and a final pose before they take a bow.

·  Visit each group. Play the song a number of times so each group can practice. All groups will perform and applause will be encouraged.

CLOSE:

Get them to calm down and ask them if there are other songs that give direction that they know of?

Assessment:

You can tell by the performance of the group as to whether they succeeded
