The Lesley Southgate Travelling Fellowship in Assessment
In 2016, as part of its tenth anniversary celebrations,The Academy of Medical Educatorsfounded the Dame Lesley Southgate Fellowship in Assessment. We are delighted to be able to offer the Fellowship again in 2017.
TheFellowship offers a unique opportunity to visit an overseas centre of excellence to gain knowledge, experience and different perspectives on medical education assessment.
Why is AoME offering this award?
The Academy of Medical Educators was founded in October 2006 as the professional standard setting body for medical educators in the United Kingdom. Professor Dame Lesley Southgate has beenone of the driving forces behind the development of the Academy of Medical Educators and a signatory to its inaugural charter. AoME decided to offer theFellowshipas a tribute to her. Professor Dame Lesley has made many important contributions to medical education policy and practice, and in particular in the area of assessment. This Fellowship will therefore focus on assisting the development of the next generation of assessment specialists.
Who is eligible?
You must be a current associate or student member, Member or Fellow of AoME. You must be a student, trainee or practitioner (e.g. teacher, researcher, education manager or similar professional) actively involved in the education of medical, dental or veterinary students and trainees. You must be in good standing and up to date with your subscription.
The Fellowship cannot be awarded retrospectively.
Applications may not be made to supplement funded or salaried Fellowship posts.
What may be paid for?
The maximum amount that may be claimed is £2,500.
The money may be spent on economy class travel, subsistence (excluding hospitality or alcohol), and accommodation only. Claims should relate only to the costs of the individual in receipt of the Fellowship.
What is the timeline for applications?
The Fellowshipwill be announced in June 2017 and applications should be received by 22September2016. Successful applications will be announcedduring the November 2017DEMEC event in Manchester.
The Fellowship must commence within twelve months of the announcement of the award or by the end of July2018. Any requests for postponement of commencement must be made within six months of the announcement of the award.
The date for submission of the final report will be 17 September 2018. The awardee will be expected to present their report at an event later in 2018.
What is expected?
If successful you will be expected to submit a 2,000 word report of yourFellowshipproject together with a 250 word abstract.
You will also present a verbal report of yourFellowshipproject at an Academic Meeting of the Academy of Medical Educators, subsequent to its completion.The registration fee for attendance at the conference will be paid separately by the Academy.
You will be expected to assign copyright of the report and any associated photographs and editorial to AoME and to give permission for publication and dissemination on the AoME website or in any other medium at AoME’s discretion. Your right to be identified as the author of the report will be unaffected.
Can I apply more than once?
No. We can accept only one application per applicant.
If I am awarded a Lesley Southgate Travelling Fellowship, will I get the funding before I go on my visit?
Yes, we will pay the funds directly into your personal bank account once the award has been granted.
I assume any amount of money that I can’t explain with receipts will have to be returned?
Yes, we will require evidence for every expense incurred and paid.
Do supporting letters have to be signed?
Yes, all supporting letters must be on headed paper with a signature. They can then be scanned and submitted with your completed application form to
The supporting letter from your home institution must confirm who you are, describe the work you are doing and how long you have been at that institution.
If you are undertaking this work as part of a prescribed course of study such as a degree or diploma, you must also supply a supporting letter from your academic supervisor.
I don’t know the exact costs at this stage. Is it acceptable to complete the application with estimated costs?
Yes, it is acceptable. Please remember that you will be required to provide evidence of expenditure and return any unspent funds. Expenditure which exceeds the stated award amount will not be refunded.
Can my Supervisor send you his/her letter directly?
No, the application letter and all supporting documents should be emailed together, either as one document or as separate attachments.
Can I apply for a Travelling Fellowship even if I have already begun the project before the deadline?
No, we do not award funds to projects that have already commenced before the decision date. Claims for expenses incurred before the decision date will not be accepted.
Will I have an answer about the result of my application even if it is negative?
Yes, you will be notified even if your application is unsuccessful.
Can I send my application by email or do you want me to send a hard copy in the post?
We will only accept applications by e-mail.In the event of any uncertainty over the authenticity of a document we will ask you to send the original by post.
