THE LATEST DECORS FROM TIMELESS TO “SPIRIT OF THE TIME”

Enduring design and fashionably vibrant accent colours are the trends at EGGERZUM 2013

Decor Management at EGGER expects two prominent elements to feature within furniture design trends over the coming years. “Design goes natural” was the motto for the last two years. It focused on combining clear, modern yet timeless solid colours with striking, rustic types of wood in the "spirit of the time". Now the trend is reversing: wood is becoming more timeless while colours are shifting to become a more current and fashionable element. This results in new combinations. That is how Klaus Monhoff, Head of Decor Management EGGER Group, describes the new trend.

ENDURING DESIGN

Klaus Monhoff expects there will still be some new decors with highly defined natural elements over the next year or two. But the proportion of decors with a used look appearance will not contiune to increase. An “enduring approach” that will lead to designs that remain popular over the long term is going to be seen in the types of wood designs that are chosen. The Decor Manager is convinced that sustainability is not only affecting production and material cycles, but also design. On the one hand, this is going to have an impact on the furniture industry, since it will have to do more planning in this direction, and on the other hand, it will also affect those markets less able to respond to themes in the “spirit of the time” due to economic weakness.

POWERFUL ACCENT COLOURS EXPRESS THE "SPIRIT OF THE TIME"

Uni colours will continue to assume an important role. “Once again, we expect the trend to head in two directions here,” Monhoff emphasises: “For more than seven years, we have observed a pronounced trend, first in favour of white and also towards warmer hues of grey – in other words, an overall trend in favour of very neutral colours. Now the designs are becoming more colourful.” This is already a well established trend with a number of products today: kitchen accessories, television sets and iPods have been presenting themselves in powerful colours for some time, setting strong accents in the "spirit of the time".

DIVERSITY OF OAK EXPLAINS ITS SUSTAINED DOMINANCE

New woodgrain decors also account for the new trend towards elements that are both timeless and current. Klaus Monhoff is convinced that oak will continue to dominate among wood types themselves. This is quite simply due to the diversity of oak, from elegant to rustic, from nearly white to the thermo treated designs.

Which is why two new colours of Barrique Oak, which were introduced last year, will be presented in the “timeless decor” category at EGGERZUM 2013. Here, EGGER has introduced a glazed version. It represents a light woodgrain decor with natural characteristics. This allows it to be combined with numerous neutral solid colours.

Oak Orleans, a strongly coloured oak decor where colour tone is more in focus than the woodgrain itself, can be combined tone-in-tone with neutral colours. Thermo Oak in black-brown and black-gold are dark tones included in the “timeless woodgrain decors”.

With Nautical Oak on the other hand, an oak decor version with pronounced cracks and highly rustic elements is presented, clearly representing the "spirit of the time" with an interplay of colours in natural and white-grey tones, which can be combined with neutral solid colours.

Yet a wood type which is not from the oak family is being introduced as well, in the form of Helsinki Birch. This is a somewhat livelier, more representative birch decor in a medium colour depth, perfect for a more long-term and timeless look.

Worktop decors also exhibit material reproductions based on the theme “TIMELESS – SPIRIT OF THE TIME”, creating lively accents or harmonious contrasts.
