The lastnewsletter of Shoshit Seva Sangh was issued on April 04, 2012. Since then the following developments have taken place which may be of interest –

i) The 6thFoundation Day of Shoshit Samadhan Kendra, the fully free English medium residential school for the poorest of the poor, run by Shoshit Seva Sangh was held on July 16, 2012, in the school premises. The function was well attended. Among those attending the function were about 300 parents and guardians of the students. The Chief Guest was Mr. Amarjeet Sinha, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Education, Government of Bihar. Speaking as the Chief Guest at the end of the function Mr. Sinha who is also a Rhodes Scholar said that he was closely involved in framing the Serva Shiksha Abhiyan (Universal Education Programme) launched by government of India and had occasion to visit many schools in the country. During these visits he witnessed cultural performances put-up by children of the schools and he could say with confidence that one of the best programme that he had seen was the one presented by SSK students on the Foundation Day. The pièce de résistance was presentation of an Act from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar by the students. Leading newspapers national dailies Times of India and Hindustan Times covered the event. ii) The construction of the boundary wall of the land (1.80 acres) acquired for the proposed school building of SSK has been completed. It is a 8 feet high wall and its area is approximately 1503 square meters on pile foundations. The total cost of construction of the boundary wall including plaster work is approximately Rs.28,27,000/-. Attempt now is to raise funds for the construction of the school building to house 500 school children The building is estimated to cost Rs.7 crores as per the Detailed Project Report.

iii) In June-July three volunteers sponsored by a Delhi based NGO called Pravah worked at the school for 45 days. One of them was a student from IIT Delhi. They lived in the school premises and were able to strike a rapport with the students. A highly qualified teacher, Mrs. Archana Jha was appointed as the Principal of SSK. She had her schooling at Loreto Covent, Ranchi and graduated with English honours from Stella Maris College, Chennai. She did her Post-graduation from Delhi University and B.Ed. from IGNOU. She has more than 15 years of teaching experience in leading schools of India including Delhi Public School and Notre Dame Academy, Patna. Presently SSK has a faculty comprising 14 highly qualified teachers, one Hostel Superintendent and two Asst. Hostel Superintendents.

The first batch of four students of Shoshit Samadhan Kendra, a fully free English medium residential school run by Shoshit Seva Sangh for the children of the poorest of the poor, the musahar (rat-eaters) community, had appeared at class X CBSE exams 2012 with English medium. Three obtained A2 grade (Excellent) and one got B1 grade (Very Good). The details are given below –

The students have done well and deserve all the encouragement and support. However, a long road lies ahead and a lot of hard work will be required to travel the distance. The faculty of Shoshit Samadhan Kendra deserves accolades for the performance of the students.

The last newsletter on Shoshit Seva Sangh was issued on December 10, 2011. Since then the following developments have taken place which may be of interest –

i) The annual examinations at the school, Shoshit Samadhan Kendra, the fully free English medium residential school for the poorest of the poor, was held in March 2012. The performance of the children was indeed very satisfactory with many students in all the classes from Pre-school to class VIII excelling at the examinations. Class X students appeared at the Secondary Board Examination and their results are expected in April-May this year.

ii) The school closed down last month for 15 days at the end of the academic year. The students went home during the holidays. On their return the senior students were asked to write their experiences during the holidays. Some of the observations are indeed extremely interesting and indicate that the education imparted at the school is succeeding in creating social awareness among the children which is the primary objective of this project apart from imparting quality education to them. The students brought up the issues among parents, relatives and friends of alcohol addiction, child marriage and the need to go to school and be serious about studies.

iii) 49 art works of the famous painter F.N. Souza owned by Shri K.B. Goel, a well known art critic and a close friend of Souza was put on sale and the proceeds were donated to Shoshit Seva Sangh by Shri Goel. The preview of the art work was held at the Claridges Hotel at New Delhi on March 14, 2012. The event was well attended and well covered by the press. The funds raised are earmarked for the proposed school building. The total estimated cost of the residential school is Rs.7 crores. The challenge is to raise the funds for the construction.

iv) It is proposed to offer to prospective donors options for donations for specific facilities to be constructed in the school building and naming that particular facility as per the wishes of the donor. The options are given below –

Classrooms (14 nos) - Rs.10 lacs per classroom

Science labs (2 nos.), computer lab (1 no.), library (2 nos.) - Rs.15 lacs each

Dining Hall (1 no.) - Rs.75 lacs

Auditorium (1 no.) - Rs.75 lacs

Dormitories (4 nos.) - Rs.50 lacs each

There shall be a black granite tablet with letters written in gold giving the name of the donor / nominee at the entrance door of the facility. A portrait of the donor / nominee can also be affixed on the granite tablet, if so requested by the donor. In the entrance foyer of the school building there shall be a granite tablet with name of donors giving Rs.5 lacs inscribed in gold. Those who may wish to donate may please click here –

v) 49 new children have joined the school at the commencement of the new academic year i.e. April 2012. All except one have joined in the pre-school class. With this the total of number of students in the school now is 285. Most of the new students have been drawn from extremely remote villages of various districts of Bihar.
