Waitrose Store Proposal 2012
PUBLIC EXHIBITION
by The Knowle Society
It is now ten months since the developers submitted the changed plans which would place the store on the old bowling green behind the Red Lion. In that time there have been extensive discussions on the details of the scheme. Some of these have been between the Council and the developers, but some of the more productive ones have been between the Society and the developers. The aims of all these discussions have been to identify the key issues with the scheme and to see if they could be solved. This was on the basis that, if the plan were to be approved by the Council, we wanted to ensure that it was as good a plan as we could get, with as many positive aspects and as few negative ones as possible.
Many of the issues have been successfully addressed. Although the number of parking spaces has not been increased, the developers are confident that the car parking will work. The changes include those to: - the landscaping and public spaces; the car park layout and pedestrian and traffic movement; linkage to the precinct and the High Street; changes to the design of the store to reduce its visibility and apparent size and to materials so it fits better with the local architecture; and increasing the distance between the bungalows’ rear gardens and the supermarket's side wall.
We now need your views on the final version of the scheme so we can respond on your behalf when it is presented to the Council Planning Committee for their decision, probably on September 26th. We have therefore organised a public exhibition of the final plans at Knowle Village Hall on Saturday 25th August, from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Please come along and give us your view of the scheme as it will be submitted for decision. There will be boxes to post your comments, using the form on the rear of this sheet, at the exhibition, in Lyon’s Butchers and in the Library from Saturday 18th August until mid-day on Saturday 1st September.
