The King Is Coming

“the king is coming”

John 12:12 – 19

§  As we travel together in this Christian journey and labor together through 2018, our theme for the year is “Faith Focused Forward” That is, the idea of every believer possessing a faith in God, having focused truly on Christ, and moving progressively forward with the aid of the Holy Spirit.

§  As we continue our journey through the Gospel of John, remember our ongoing endeavor is getting to know Jesus better. This morning’s narrative continues to uncover the closing events of Jesus’ public ministry and to unveil the power of this “Charismatic Leader” in His final days on earth. ______

§  The Bible teaches that on the next day following the supper celebration, in Bethany, was Sunday and Jesus went up with his disciples to Jerusalem six days before the Passover. ______

§  The Word of God makes plain that Jesus’ sudden popularity was rooted in the spectacular miracle of the raising of Lazarus and not in true faith. ______

§  The Gospel of John challenges every believer to examine his or her heart and to confirm her or his faith in Christ through worship, work, and witness. ______

The Relevant Question > “What happens now that the King is coming?”

1 – the ______[v12]

§  When the crowds in Jerusalem heard that Jesus was coming, a wild, spontaneous, enthusiastic ______broke out. ______

§  Those that have a real relationship and a faithful fellowship with Christ will declare their love for the Lord, with or without a ______. ______

§  In v18, we are told that > “The crowd went out to meet Jesus because they heard that Jesus had performed this miracle.” ______

§  Now that the King is come … ______

2 – the ______[v13]

§  Here, the crowd offers Jesus the sacrifice of praise and the fruit of their lips. The crowd starts shouting > “HOSANNA” ______

§  According to John’s Gospel, the One who comes in the name of the Lord is Jesus. On this occasion, this Palm Sunday, it seems to have been sung spontaneously and was more or less consciously done. ______

§  In this triumphant entry into Jerusalem, King Jesus is not mounted on a proud warhorse, but Jesus enters the holy city riding upon a humble young donkey. ______

§  In v15, Daughter of Zion is a poetic way of referring to the people of Jerusalem, the city built on Mount Zion. Here, in quoting Zechariah 9:9, John calls Jesus Israel’s King. ______

§  In Luke 19:39, “Some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.” ______

§  Here, the Pharisees realize that > “they have not accomplished what they set out to do.” ______

§  The size of the crowd kept increasing and the Pharisees are furious over the growing popularity and truth that the world has gone after Jesus. ______

§  As for the people, v17-18 appear to mention two different crowds of people. ______

§  This caused despair on the part of the Pharisees, they would not so easily be able to carry out their murderous plot: ______
