What’s Past is Prologue: A House Brimming with Stories, is the embodiment of the past and present as it narrates the Field Family’s multiple contributions to American society, framed in a modern day context. Built more than 160 years ago, The Field House Museum was once part of a series of row houses, a get-away from the noise and smoke of the smallmetropolis of St. Louis. Large murals tell the stories of Roswell and Frances’ life in St. Louis, Roswell’s contributions to the Dred Scott case, and poet Eugene Field whose verses captivated boys and girls across the country. A separate tale depicted in the gallery is that of the museum itself, and its transition from the Eugene Field Shrine to The Field House Museum that visitors see today.
