THE KEVIN ROCHFORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship programme has been established in memory of Professor Kevin Rochford who was a respected and loved Associate Professor in the UCT School of Science Education till his untimely passing on 22 April 2008. According to a number of reports, he was an exceptional teacher, who was always available, was flexible and who taught with a unique combination of authority and an element of surprise. He would walk the extra mile for his students. He also ran many Comrades and Two Oceans Marathons, representing the UCT Athletics Club magnificently for many years.

ONE scholarship is available to a South African student who will register for study for the 1st year of registration for the BEd(Honours) degree, the 1st or 2nd year of registration for the Master’s degree, or the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of registration for the PhD degree in Science Education, or, if no Science Education student is awarded the scholarship, it may be awarded to a student studying Mathematics Education.

Eligible candidates must have an intention to teach mathematics and/or science following completion of the degree.

Eligibility:

Eligible candidates must have achieved a weighted average of at least 60% in the final year of the previous qualification. Suitable candidates must show financial need, and must intend to pursue a career in Science (or Mathematics) Education. There is no restriction on race or gender.

Value and Tenure:

The value of the Scholarship is R25,000

The tenure of the award is strictly ONE YEAR.The award may be renewable for the second year of registration for Master’s or Doctoral students, and for the 3rd and final year of registration for Doctoral students. Renewal of the award will be contingent on satisfactory academic progress and the availability of funds.

Conditions of Award

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Provide a mid-year progress report, reflecting grades achieved for mid-year examinations or comment by the Course Convenor/Supervisor on progress.
  • Provide a full report on the year’s study at the end of the academic year.
  • Repay all or part of the bursary to the University of Cape Town should she/he withdraw from the course for which the bursary has been awarded; deregister or fail to achieve the degree in Science (or Mathematics) Education in the prescribed time-frame of one year for Honours, 2 years for Master’s and 3 years for Doctoral study.
  • Undertake to comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures and practices on postgraduate funding.

Applicants are required to:

  • Complete and submit the attached application form.
  • write a letter of application outlining the intended study and how she/he intends to use the study in her/his career in the future, specifying the intention to pursue his/her career in Science (or Mathematics)Education;
  • attach a certified copy of all academic transcripts (University only);
  • attach a certified copy of SA identity document; and
  • provide a letter from the Course Convenor/Head of Department indicating that he/she is likely to be accepted by the relevant department for study in 2016.
