The John and Vlasta Kroes Merit Scholarship

WHAT IS THE SCHOLARSHIP
The John and Vlasta Kroes Merit Scholarship was created in 2015 and is funded by Michael Kroes, a member of Roma Lodge, in memory of his parents. The scholarship awards $1000 to a child of a Roma Lodge member who is in good standing as of January 31 of that calendar year. The scholarship can be applied to any course of study leading to a recognized baccalaureate degree in any accredited United States college or university of the recipient’s choice.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
All graduating high school seniors, who are biological or adopted children of Roma Lodge members, are eligible to apply for the scholarship. An applicant’s father must be a member in good standing as of January 31st of the calendar year that application for the scholarship is made. The recipient’s father must continue to be a member in good standing for the duration of the scholarship. Applicants must be planning to pursue a full-time program of study (12 credits or more) in a college or university in the United States. The recipient of the Kroes Scholarship will not be eligible to receive any other scholarships offered through Roma Lodge.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
An applicant must:
- Have maintained, at least, acumulative 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) during his/her high school career and through the first semester of his/her high school senior year.
- Complete a high school college preparatory course of study
- Demonstrate a commendable academic record which will qualify for admission to the college university of their choice
- Demonstrate positive citizenship and leadership qualities through participation in school and community activities.
- Show potential for higher academic success by achieving ACT or SAT scores acceptable to the college or university of their choice.
- Submit an official high school transcript
- Submit an ACT or SAT scores report form
- Submit two letters of recommendation
Financial need will not be considered during the selection process.
The completed application must be in the hands of the Scholarship Committee no later than March 25, 2016.

SELECTION CRITERIA
The recipient of this scholarship will be selected by a panel of independent evaluators in the Racine - Kenosha area. Roma Lodge officers or members do nottake part in the selection of the recipient.
. Selection is based on:
- High school academic performance – 50%
- Extracurricular activities – 25%
- Community activities (church activities, volunteer activities, etc.) – 25%

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RECIPIENT
Therecipient of the John and Vlasta KroesMerit Scholarship will be selected by April 30th and notified in early May of each year. The recipient will also berecognized at the recipient’s high schoolspring scholarship awards ceremony when possible.
DOLLAR VALUE AND PAYMENT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP
One Thousand dollars will be paid to the scholarship recipient upon receipt of a copy of his/her formal acceptance to the college or university he/she will be attending. Letters of acceptance should be sent to:

OTHER AWARDS
An individual cannot be the recipient of more than one of the three scholarships (Roma Lodge Merit, Missureli and Kroes) Roma Lodge offers. Recipients may accept scholarships from other organizations.
REAPPLICATION FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP
A recipient of the scholarship may NOT reapply for a second year’s award.
RECIPIENT OBLIGATIONS
Recipients are responsible for making entrance arrangements with their colleges and for fulfilling entrance requirements.
Upon completion of scholarship award time period: Recipients are required to submit:
- A letter explaining what they have achieved during the academic year of the scholarship.
- A transcript from the college in which they are enrolled listing courses and grades completed during the academic year.
