The Ivy Speech and Language Centre is a Kent resourced provision for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) based at West Minster Primary School. We are part of the Sheerness West Federation, which has Rose Street Primary School as its partner.

Here in the Ivy Centre we promote a warm, friendly and stimulating environment, where talents are recognised and children with speech and language disorders are well supported in achieving their goals.

Role Profile

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and resilient individual who has a clear commitment to inclusion and a passion for ensuring that all pupils achieve their best. The post involves working under the direction of the teacher in charge of the unit and the Assistant Head responsible for Inclusion. The person appointed will be part of a hard-working, supportive and highly successful Inclusion team that comprises SEN and well-being staff.

We are looking for a Teaching Assistant who can demonstrate

  • A commitment to inclusion and passion about improving the life chances for all our pupils
  • A caring nature and excellent interpersonal skills is key to this role given the subject area, as well as high expectations of self and others
  • Ability to build strong partnerships with parents, teachers and support staff
  • Ability to work as a team
  • Be prepared to go the extra mile for our children and families
  • An understanding of the needs of children who have difficulties with speech and / or language
  • Skills in specific speech and language strategies such as signing, cued articulation, PECs, colour semantics or a willingness to undertake training
  • A wide knowledge and experience of working with children with additional needs
  • Strong classroom practice, particularly with regard to effectively meeting individual needs
  • A secure knowledge of the primary curriculum
  • Full awareness of issues surrounding safeguarding and child protection issues

If you can do all that, can liaise effectively with a wide variety of external agencies and keep yourself organised at all times (whilst making tea and providing cakes), you’re perfect!!
