WHITE GUARD
This is neither a performance about the White movement nor about Russian officers in the Civil War, but about people who are forced to live in this period of great change. When the usual, stable, established things fall apart, explode, go down the drain. The designer Alexander Borovsky has created a splendid set: on the vast and open stage he built a sloped bridge with some lampposts, and in the left hand corner he created the Turbins’ household which is removed from its habitual space. The war has literally entered the household: Bulgakov’s heroes sit at a table surrounded by soldiers, boys in grey overcoats, with rifles in their hands, ready to fight. Each protagonist has its own biography, character and destiny. But together they form that long awaited ensemble, which once upon a time was the pride of the Arts Theatre and is a rarity in our days. The young stars, such as Konstantin Khabensky, Mikhail Porechenkov, Aleksandr Semchev, and Anatoly Bely, as well as the older Moscow Arts Theatre actors, such as Vladimir Kashpur, Viktor Sergachev, and the young students of the theatre school, all give a fine, deep and charming performance.

THE BOYS
Sergei Zhenovach’s new theatre is one of the most pleasant occurrences of Moscow’s theatre life of the last few years. Moreover, "The Boys" is a typical example of the deep textual penetration for which Russian theatre has always been so famous. The actors do not gallop through all the themes and peripetias of “The Brothers Karamazov”, but they try to penetrate one single thematic line that runs from the first appearance of Ilyushenka Snegiryov to the teenager’s death and the oath by his gravestone; from violent passions to enlightenment; from conversations about honour to Christian humility; and from the belief in oneself to the belief in God – and is this not Dostoevsky's main subject-matter? The bare, often parodic theatricalization of the classics is not muffled in this production, but Zhenovach skilfully, sometimes masterly, finds scenic and psychological justifications. The acting may be clear, often too bright, but it is never superficial.

TRAVELS
The premiere at Tabakov’s Theatre is called “Travels”, or “Adventures”, based on Nikolai Gogol’s ‘poem’ Dead Souls”. The director, Mindaugas Karbauskis, interprets this chief work of 19th-century classical Russian literature as an adventure novel with all the traditional features of this genre. His hero is possessed by a grandiose idea, a courageous and inspired plan to accumulate capital. This business enterprise turns into a fascinating adventure, into a comedy with ridiculous situations and stark, recognizable characters. As the action unfolds, it turns into a journey around the world of the living and the dead and acquires the features of a parable, behind which lie hidden eternal questions of life. The part of Chichikov is played by the star of modern Russian theatre and cinema, Sergei Bezrukov.

MARIENBAD
Based on a novel by Sholom-Aleyhem «MARIENBAD» tells the story of different jewish families, their life dramas on the health-resort.
The main characters of the performance are a rich jew Shloyma Kurlender and his young wife Beyltsa, who live in Warszawa on Nalewki street. The age difference between them is more than 40 years, Beyltsya is not yet 20. She leaves alone to a health resort called Marienbad, where all the … of nalewki are already on holiday.
Shloyma worries about his wife and writes to his friend Haim Soroker , who is in marienbad, and askes him to look after her and help her. From this moment the confusion begins. Haim Soroker convinces Shloyma that he is taking care of Beyltsa, but in reality, he openly courts her, like many other married men in the health-resort.
In the performance the distance between Warszawa and Marienbad is merely symbolic. The characters are separated and bound together by letters they write to each other. Big and small they are being filed into postboxes every minute. On the table and on the stage the passions burn with the great force –husbands can’t breathe from jealousy, their wives rebuke them of being suspicious.
They get entangled in gossip and telling on each other. As a result all real and unreal treasons acquire the enormous scale that poison the life of both the resting people and their families at home. The climax of the confusion of letters, names and addresses became a forgery. In despondency and anger Shloyma takes love letters addressed to his wife, and writes names of other women, who are on holiday in Marienbad, and sends it to their husbands. Receiving these letters the husbands rebel. They have massive rows with their wives, many of which lead to divorce. The confusion becomes a farce and the rest becomes a real nightmare.

DOORS
There are numerous ways to organize space around humans. Here in “The Doors” we limit a number of those ways to just two – Dance and Doors. The art of dance in general is based on conflicts and reconciliations of human body and space, the art of doors is hidden under the everyday use.
In fact, a Door is an object of extreme importance, both in material world and spiritual universe. As a mark and instrument of enter/exit transformations, door follows us through the entire life – starting from cutting a child’ height on a doorway, through sneaking in and out, through painting and breaking, through visiting the beloved ones to the last passport control by heaven border guard.
We also can not ignore the fact, that door is a measure of time, not only when we stay in front of the closed one, waiting permission to entry, but for example in subway, where doors cut regular portions of human masses, according to season and height of the sun.
So here we try to dance with doors or let them dance themselves; we pick up and collect fragments of space, cut out by the doors; we freeze in front of them or breake through…
