Biographical Details

Monica Ferreira trained in Sociology, and has worked primarily in health sociology, social demography and social gerontology. She headed the Human Sciences Research Council’s (HSRC) Centre for Research on Ageing in Pretoria for ten years; was seconded to the University of Cape Town (UCT) as the founding director of the joint HSRC/UCT Centre for Gerontology in 1991; and headed the subsequent interdisciplinary Institute of Ageing in Africa (IAA) at the University from 2001 through 2006. The Institute was admitted to the International Longevity Center (ILC) Alliance in June 2005. Ferreira has published over 100 scientific papers and was the founding editor of the Southern African Journal of Gerontology. She is an advisory board member of the International Institute on Ageing (INIA) (United Nations–Malta) and the World Demographic Association; has been a consultant to the UN Programme on Ageing (on the Africa regional ageing situation, HIV/AIDS and family well-being, global elder abuse), the World Health Organization (WHO) Division of Evidence and Information for Policy (on health status evaluation of older persons in Africa, a minimum data set on ageing in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)), and the African Union Labour and Social Affairs Commission (on setting up an Advisory Council on Ageing); and is a member of the steering group of the African Research on Ageing Network (AFRAN). She was a member of the UN Technical Committee to draft the Madrid International Plan of Ageing on Ageing (MIPAA), and expert groups to draft the African Union Policy Framework and Plan of Action on Ageing, the UN/International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics ResearchAgenda on Ageing for the 21st Century and regional Research Agenda on Ageing for Sub-Saharan Africa, and the AFRAN research agenda on ageing for SSA. Other expert groups in which she participated include WHO’s (Kobe, Japan) compilation of a glossary on community health care and ageing terms; UNFPA/INIA’s development of training programmes for senior government officials for review and appraisal of MIPAA; Help the Aged/INIA’s Valletta Declaration on HIV/AIDS and older persons; and a UN/HelpAge International consultation on Sustainable Social Structures in an Ageing World. Ferreira is the Regional Representative for Africa of the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA). She retired from UCT at the end of 2006; has started a consultancy, AgeConsultAfrica; and continues to conduct research, author scientific and policy papers, engage in international ageing and development activities, and contribute to International Longevity Centre–South Africa (ILCSA).
