The Iliad
Track 1 – Disc 4 (3 mins)
- The subject of the Iliad is the anger of Achilles
- The subject of the Trojan war is the other gods
- Achilles and Agamemnon warrior
- Hector
- Achilles best friend dies and drops his fight with Agamemnon
- Anger of Achilles – springs from his pride necessary to a great warrior
- Agamemnon – handsome and valuable gifts – not if his gifts outnumber – could Ag. Ever appease me – honour cannot be purchased
Track 7 - Disc 12
- At Hector’s side – do not attack Achilles yet
- Hector drew back – Achilles drew upon him, and killed another man
- His had split in two – Achilles cried out – terror of all soldiers – there ye lie
- Achilles hit him on the head – spear through his helmet
- Acean’s speared him in the back – before Poseidon – god of earthquake takes joy in watching them
- Achilles turned his spear on another man
- Great battlefield runner – hit with a golden belt – passing through the man – passing out through the navel – sprawled out
Track 8 – Disc 12 - Hector saw his brother fall before him – Hector could not hang at a distance and ran upon Achilles
- Achilles versus Hector – come on, Hector said – you can frighten me with words but I’m as far as being a match for you. By heaven I can take your life.
- Apollo – 3 times Achilles lunge with his spear – he lunged a fourth time – you got away from death again you dog – Apollo saved you again. I will kill you later – I will tackle others now – any other Trojans that I can find.
Track 9 – Disc 12
- Imagine that Achilles that could be swayed –
- Wound came blood. Achilles move towards someone else and hit someone else by the ear
- Another sword straight through his head. Elbow tendons – spear goes through the man’s arm. Achilles go through neck. (This man is quite the warrior)
- Rich man of Thrace – spear into the abdomen – and off his chariot
- Achilles trampled the men he killed
- Drops of bloods thrown up through the drive through the men he
Track 4 – Disc 13
- Athena overtook lord Hector
- Hector – of all my brothers – I honour you still more – you seeing me run
- Athena – my dear brother –let us fight him and fight him hard – let us see if Achilles can be brought down by his spear.
- Hector was the first to speak. I won’t run from you as before. Whether I’ll be killed or I kill you. I should not insult your corpse. I will give your body back to the Greeks and I hope you will do the same for me.
- Achilles- talks back – no courtesy no sworn truce between us
- Summon up what skills you have – there is no way out, you will pay the reckoning for all the men
Track 5 (Disc 13)
- Cast his shaft with his long shadow and Hector was sparred
- Again he tried to hit him again
- Deadly aim at Hector – nearly all was covered
- Achilles drove his sword into Hector – but sparred his windpipe
Track 6 (Disc 13) - Dialogue between them – the dogs will rip your body
- Hector – I beg you by your soul and by your parents do not let your dogs feed on me, accept the gifts from my father, and let them have my body back.
- Achilles – beg me no beggary by soul or parents. You’ve caused such agony for me. Not for your weight in gold. You will not be laid out
- Dogs and birds will have you every scrap
- I see you now for what you are. (Hector says to Achilles). This might the gods hold against you. Great as you are. Even as he spoke – the end came and death hit him.
- He left his manhood in the world. Achilles – die – I will accept my own when Zeus decides
- HE stripped the shield from his shoulders.
Track 7 (Disc 13)
- Everyone came around to see Achilles – everyone came and stabbed the body. Now Hector has turned vulnerable.
- Achilles ties Hector to the chariot. The head so princely lies in dust.
- His mother wailed – heartbroken to be close to her son
