THE IDENTITY – the journey continues…

As I stood listening to ‘The Identity’ at a recent gig in Hull, following a three hour journey transporting guitars, amps, flight cases and numerous other technical components across the notorious motorway network I experienced a moment of real awareness.

An awareness to be precise, that the young people involved (Rob, Mike, Steve, Matt, Jonny & Stuart (the sound engineer) were no longer a novice act seeking some external affirmation but a set of accomplished musicians performing an excellent repertoire that engaged their east coast audience. The pulsating rhythm and melodic structure display a very distinctive originality and new material bears testimony to their expanding horizons in terms of creativity and direction. The band has undergone a seismic shift from simple basic beginnings to producing complex arrangements that require skill, concentration and excessive practice.

The midway talk by Matt that explained the band’s desire to raise money for Shelter and their faith journey that underpins their work, was poignant and mature. In fact, their classic song ‘anonymous’ reinforced the initiative (all words were written by an anonymous homeless person). All proceeds were given to Shelter.

It must be said that the fruit of their labour is accomplished through relentless practice sessions where they have grown through the struggle of maintaining relationships as they search for musical integrity and direction. The fact that they are still playing together is a testament to their individual commitment to the group collective despite the tension of university and school agendas. In reality they are friends who struggle and wrestle with each other’s individuality but who have chosen to be and grow together.

I noted some young people from the local area in Hull who having heard the band from a distance wanted to explore and examine this musical phenomenon. The authentic applause at the end of songs was evidence that the band’s music permeates societal cultural boundaries and a further reminder that music still does offer a clear tool in communication that transcends other medium.

They recently played in Lichfield and will soon be playing at a Scripture Union event at Blackpool Pleasure Beach along with a Chester based event called ‘Engage’ in July along with some other potential opportunities.

Please continue to pray for these young people – hold them in the presence of a God of love.
