MINUTES

APRIL 25, 2012

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Township of Haddon Shade Tree Commission held on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 in the Haddon Township Environmental and Historical Center at 143 E. Ormond Avenue, Haddon Township, New Jersey.

Chapter 231, Public Law 1975 requires adequate notice of this meeting be provided specifying time, place, and agenda. This has been done by placing an Annual Notice in the Courier-Post and Retrospect Newspapers, and by posting on two bulletin boards in the Municipal Building.

Meeting called to order by Robert (Bob) Herbstritt at 7:00 p.m. Betty Brookes read Sunshine Law and took roll.

MINUTES

Marge Howley motioned to approve Minutes from the March 25th meeting. Chris Squazzo seconded. Minutes approved.

AGENDA

Chris Squazzo discussed two small trees planted by the STC were damaged. One tree was located on Graisbury and one on E. Ormond. Chris also reported the black locust tree at the Conover’s residence was removed as requested.

Derrick Maley opened the meeting for discussion on planting trees on King Avenue. There is an issue of a parallel gas line to the curb strip. Alexander stated there are ways of planting with this scenario and he could provide information.

Catherine Turcich and Marge Howley suggested creating a subcommittee to explore the STC purchasing trees at a bulk rate for resale to the residents. Alexander has information on bare root trees, which could be purchased at a low cost. Chris has 25 mini willow oaks. Chris and Derrick will grow the trees in pots until they are large enough to replant.

Catherine motioned to create a subcommittee designed to purchase trees for the residents to plant. Derrick second. Approved.

Bob motioned to appoint Marge and Catherine as co-chairs for the aforementioned subcommittee. Ryan seconded. Approved.

PUBLIC COMMENTS

311 Crestwood Avenue: Resident Jim Bresch from 311 Crestwood Avenue attended the meeting to discuss the trees to be planted in the curb strip at his residence on Arbor Day. He had requested through an email to the STC he did not want trees due to his sprinkler system. The STC stated they would review his concerns.

OLD BUSINESS

Arbor Day Celebration April 27th: Alexander reviewed the final details of the ceremony and discussed who would be attending. The programs are completed. Mulch will be placed at tree planting locations on Friday morning. The tent for the ceremony will be set up on Thursday. There are 333 volunteers attending.

Alexander also presented the Shade Tree Commission with a poster for the Space Shuttle Pine that was awarded to the Commission.

130 Penn Avenue: The tree roots were cut out for the installation of a new sidewalk by Almand Bros. Due to the damage to the tree roots, the tree was removed by Dept. of Public Works. Both the Township Zoning Official and Compliance Officer have been contacted.

86 Melrose Avenue: The resident has not complied with the replacement of two curb trees. The issue will now be turned over the Township Compliance Officer.

NEW BUSINESS

Marge Howley: Marge Howley, Shade Tree Commissioner, resigned as commissioner due to time constraints.
