A Word from Pastor John

A well-known speaker started off his seminar holding up a $20.00 bill. He asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?” Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 bill to one of you but first, let me do this.” He then proceeded to crumple up the $20 bill. He then asked, “Who still wants it….?” Still the hands were up in the air. “Well,” he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. “Now, who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air.

He then said, “My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We may feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value.

Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE.

You are special – don’t EVER forget it.

This year – 2017 – count your blessings, not your problems!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

John

The Blackwood BrothersQuartet

Saturday, January 28, 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, January 29, 10:30 a.m.

The Blackwood Brothers Quartet will be in concert at the Green Valley Baptist Church on Saturday evening, January 28, at 6:00 p.m. and in the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service on January 29.

The Blackwood Brothers Quartet was formed in 1934 with brothers Roy, Doyle and James along with Roy’s son, R.W., who was killed in a tragic airplane accident in 1954. Roy and Doyle retired from the road in the late ‘40s. James continued to lead the group into the early 1980s, and over the years it has become the best-known name in gospel quartet history.

James, the last surviving member of the original quartet, went to be with the Lord in 2002, but his son, James, Jr. (Jimmy) brought the name out of retirement and now James’ youngest son, Billy, continues the 80 year family tradition of great gospel singing. The group today consists of Billy Blackwood, Wayne Little, Butch Owens, and Mike Helwig.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRY

Happy New Year! We pray that you and yours are filled with God’s love during this New Year.

On Sunday mornings we have a variety of services available for your children and grandchildren. Our church Nursery is an inviting space filled with toys and books and staffed by nursery workers ready to care for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Nursery care is often available at other times during the week when there are activities at GVBC. Please call the church office to verify that the Nursery will be open.

On January 8, 2017, Children’s Church will begin again. Children ages 6 through fifth grade are invited to attend Children’s Church each week during our Sunday worship service. The Sunday bulletin indicates when they leave worship time. The curriculum for Children’s Church is Lifeway’s The Gospel Project for Kids. We will continue to work in the book, The Church. At the beginning of January we will complete the unit Paul’s Conversion and Ministry. Individual sessions will be “Paul’s third Journey” and “Paul’s Ministry to Rome.” Then we begin the final unit in our curriculum, God’s Plan for the Church is Fulfilled. Individual sessions for January include “Church Responsibility” and “Christ’s Return is Anticipated.”

During this new year, our youth will become more visible by beginning to help in various roles during the service on Sunday mornings. These will be new experiences for them, and we know you will enjoy getting to know our youth.

How to stay safe in the world today:

  1. Avoid riding in automobiles, for they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.
  2. Do not stay home, because 17% of all accidents occur in the home.
  3. Avoid walking on streets and sidewalks, because 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.
  4. Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water because 16% of all accidents involve these forms of transportation.
  5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals. So above all else, avoid hospitals.
  6. BUT…., you will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services IN CHURCH, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at church!
  7. And, Bible study is safe, too. The percentage of deaths during Bible study is even less.
  8. So attend church, and read your Bible. It could save your life!

Jer. 29: 11 states “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” (NASB).

See you in Sunday School, and bring a friend!

FIRE DRILL!

We’ve never had a fire drill in Green Valley Baptist Church. Neither have most churches across the country. So, if the church were on fire, would you know what to do?

First, a few physical realities of our campus. There is no public address system in either building; there is no sprinkler system in the main building (Building A); the location of fire hydrants means that fire department apparatus will block the only entry/exit routes to/from the campus; fire department response time to our campus is about three minutes. Therefore, it is likely that the fire department will be on site before most occupants of Building A are even aware that a fire exists.

What does that mean for your escape route? Every room in both buildings has an evacuation route floorplan posted near each door indicating the closest exits from each location. Once outside, everyone must move to the west end of campus: Building A, to the Mission House and Building B (the office/day care building) to the ramada. A head count can be made once everyone is at those marshaling areas, ensuring that no one is left behind.

The parking lot will be jammed with emergency equipment, and any attempt to get into your vehicle and depart the campus will only impede the fire department response and endanger persons fleeing the building. Do not go to your vehicle! Go to the west end of campus so we can ensure everyone’s safety!

“A Ministry of the Green

Valley Baptist Church”

Happy New Year! We are looking forward to a blessed new year at Shepherd’s Fold Preschool.

This year’s “Annual Preschool Christmas Pageant,” went great. If you missed it this year, be sure to join us next year. What a blessing to see the children recreating the first Christmas and understanding that Christmas is more than just receiving presents. All of us here at Shepherd’s Fold would like to extend a great big “Thank You” to all the volunteers for their dedication to the children.

We pray that the blessings continue in the coming year as we strive to provide the best Christian environment for our young children and their families.

Please note, the quarterly meeting for the Board of Directors, Shepherd’s Fold Preschool will be Thursday, January 19, at 3:00 p.m.

God Bless,

Below is a list of suggested reading:

Adult

The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Rolling by Neta Jackson. A devastating fire wakes up the Yada Yadas to a new reality: God is on the move.

A Voice in the Wind by Francine Rivers. Come visit the world of ancient Rome, as the “Mark of the Lion” trilogy lives out the trials and passions experienced by so many early Christians.

Following is a book review by Virginia Crabtree:

Agents of the Apocalypse by Dr. David Jeremiah. Dr. Jeremiah has studied extensively on the end times and the book of Revelation. In this particular book, he presents a chapter on each of the key players during the end times. He has written a dramatized account of each character in the first part of the chapter, and then in the last part he discusses the Scripture behind the story.

The book helped make me aware of the end-time characters and the story as it unfolds during that time. It is important to know and to be able to tell others what will transpire during those last days. As Dr. Jeremiah has said, his purpose is that the readers may be strengthened in their“resolve to stand firm for Christ in the face of the worst of circumstances.” “The Christian’s victory in Christ is an absolute certainty.”

The book is written in an easy to read format, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the characters and events from the book of Revelation.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR!

February 5 is the day scheduled for the Super Bowl for sports enthusiasts. February 5 is also the date designated for our annual Souper Sunday. That Sunday we will bring canned soup to be given to Caring Ministries, a Southern Baptist mission. This will be shared with those in need in Tucson and the surrounding areas.

We will have tables set up in the front of the Sanctuary where you can place your soup cans. If you “forget” to bring your cans, we will have baskets for monetary gifts. This is a longstanding project of Women On Mission. Thanks for sharing.
