The future tense with will

We can use will to make a suggestion or offer to help. Look at these examples.

• I need a cup of coffee.

I'll make one for you.

• I haven't got a pen.

I'll lend you mine.

A) Match the sentences on the left with the suggestions and offers on the right.

1. The front door is still open. a) OK, I'll change the channel.

2. It's cold in here. b) Sorry! I'll take them back to the shop.

3. We haven't got any fruit. c) I'll close the window.

4. The TV programme is terrible. d) Don't worry. I'll lock it.

5. I wanted lemons, not melons! e) I'll buy some at the market.

6. Have you got any football boots? f) No, but I'll borrow some.

Direct and indirect objects

A) Look at the word order in these sentences.

Subject / Verb / Direct object / Indirect object
I / bought / a really trendy outfit / for Hector.
I / bought / something really cool / for him.

Note that you can say the same thing in a different way.

Subject / Verb / Indirect object / Direct object
I / bought / Hector / a really trendy outfit.
I / bought / him / something really cool.

Other verbs that have the pattern:

do something for someone

bring (for) give (to) lend (to)

pass (to) send (to) show (to)

B) Change the sentences.

Example: I bought a shirt for Hector.

I bought Hector a shirt.

The verb look

He looks good.

He looks like a film star.
