Rolls of the Forest of Peak

SECTION VI.

CHAPTER IX.

The Record Office has at last done something towards the arrangement of these Rolls, and with one exception—a duplicate in the Chapter House Records—the Forest Rolls are now collected with the Duchy of Lancaster Records, although as a fact the most important portion of these Rolls are properly Crown Records since the Duchy only obtained possession of this Manor in 1372, However, this for the Record Office is a small matter, and the mistake is part1ally hidden by not giving a proper date. The first Peak record is ½ in the new catalogue, it is a Royal Grant of the 14 Henry III. of Fairfield and Manistanfield. The first and most important Forest Roll was originally F 52, it has no date assignee to it except that of King Henry, but it is of the 36th year of hii reign as can readily be proved by the writ directed to the Justice: to hold the pleas, and from the internal evidence of the Roll: themselves which show that they relate to transactions dated fron the 18th of King John to the 36th Henry HI., this Roll is now ⅓ The next Roll is that of the same year which was formerly F54. and is now ¼. F 51, which is of the 13th Edward I. and is so dated, is now 1/5, and F 53 of the same year is now 1/6. .
A Roll of 30 Edward I., formerly F 55, (2) is now 1/9, it is ai extent of Fairfield.
A Roll of Edward I. was No. F 50 and is now 1/11.
Four sheets of paper of n Edward II., copy of a roll. was F 5 (6) and is now 1/13.

232 THE ROLLS OF THE FOREST OF PEAK.

Thirteen sheets of paper copies of Inquisition ad quos damnum of the 12 Edward II. and were F 55 (1) and are now 1/14.

A Roll of 4 Edward III. of 12 membranes was formerly F 55 (5) and is now 1/15.

One of 8 Edward III. consisting of 22 m. No. 1/17, is wrongly included, it is not a Derbyshire but a Lancashire Roll relating to West Derby, now a suburb of Liverpool. L12, this Roll also contains entries relating to Northamptonshire and other counties.

A membrane dated 34 Henry VIII. of encroachments is numbered 4/17.

There is a membrane of a Roll of the time of Chas I. which was formerly F 55 (3) and which is now 5/7.

Twenty-eight sheets of paper of the date 1772 consist of retuins relating to woods, it is numbered 5/9.

By attention to the changes here given any roll which was formerly numbered as above may be followed in the new numbers.

The following dates of the several tenures of office of the undermentioned King's Bailiffs are taken partly from inferences drawn from the Rolls themselves and partly from other records, it is remarkable that the Patent Rolls as published contain so few references to them, they must have been appointed by letters patent.

William earl of derby held the office six years (see p. 207, Section V.) 18 John to 6 Hy. III., he was appointed by patent 18 John, m. 4. n. 46.

Brian de insula (7to 12 Hy. III.) six years. The Pipe Roll records the grant to him of the 7 Hy. III. of the farm of the Peak and of Bolsover for ,£50.

robert de lexington (12 to 18 Hy. III.) five years. The Pipe Roll of 12 Hy. III. records his appointment. ralf fil nicolas, for one year (18 to 19 Hy. III.) john goband, for three years (19 to 21 Hy. III.) thomas de furnival, half a year (21 Hy. III.) warner engaine, for five years (21 to 26 Hy. III.) john de grey, for six years (27 to 32 Hy. III.) William DE horsenden, for one year (33 Hy. III.) Patent Roll datfd 27th April of that year, m. 6, give his appointment.
