This is the House of God

Let the people offer prayer upon entering their pews, kneeling or bowing down.

In the Lord’s Name we greet you, praying that the Holy Spirit would bless your hearing of God’s Word with a lively trust in Him who died and rose for you, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Use the time prior to the service for silent preparation for worship.

Visitors, consider prayerfully Trinity’s Confession of the Lord’s Supper on the pink bulletin insert.

See front inside cover of LSB for prayers before and after the service, and before and after receiving the Sacrament.

For self-examination before the service, consider the Christian Questions, pages 329, 330 in LSB.

Prepare for the Liturgy by marking the pages and the hymns, reviewing the order of Service, and praying the Collect for the Day.

Please leave a record of your visit either in our guest book near the main door or on the guest side of the pink slip in your service folder.

Service Notes

“Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful” (Luke 6:36–42); pour yourselves out for the needy and afflicted [Isaiah 58:6-12). The old Adam in us, however, wants to condemn and seek vengeance, but the Lord says, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay” (Romans 12:14–21). To condemn, to avenge yourself, is to put yourself in the place of God. Personal vengeance fails to trust that He is just. Ultimately, it is to disbelieve that Jesus suffered the full vengeance for all wrongs. Only Christ is merciful as the Father is merciful. He is the one who overcame all evil with the good of His cross, forgiving even His executioners. He is the One who does not condemn but gives life that runs over.

Green, the color of growth, is the color for the Sundays after Holy Trinity.

Language of the Faith

Tent: The dwelling place of God, now found in the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ, who is present in Word and Sacrament. In God’s tent, the Church is kept safe from evil until the final day when God will dwell with her in all of His glory.

The love of Christ fills the hearts of all Christians so that strife and division cease and peace and forgiveness prevail.

Service of the Word

Introit, Psalm 27

The Church prays to God to deliver her from all who conspire to cause her injury and ruin.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. For He shall hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will lift me high upon a rock.

Kyriepage 186

Gloria in Excelsispage 187

Salutation Collectpage 189

We pray for both inward and outward peace so that we may worship and serve God.

Grant, O Lord, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by Your governance that Your Church may joyfully serve You in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ, our Lord who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament Reading, Isaiah 58:6-12

As part of the Lord’s plan of salvation, Jerusalem would be rebuilt by a penitent remnant, whose faith would be visible in outward evidence.

6“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 7Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

8Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. 9Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.'’

If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, 10if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. 11And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. 12And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in.”

Psalm 138, a 8b

God’s favor rests upon the humble and He will never forsake those whom He has chosen, but deliver them from all their troubles.

Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do notforsake the work| of Your hands.

1I give You thanks,O Lord, with| my whole heart*

before the gods I| sing Your praise;

2I bow down toward Your holy temple and give thanks to Your name for Your steadfast love and Your| faithfulness,*

for You have exalted above all things Your name| and Your word.

3On the day I called, You| answered me;*

my strength of soul| You increased.

4All the kings of the earth shall give You thanks,| O Lord*

For they have heard the words| of Your mouth,

5and they shall sing of the ways| of theLord,*

for great is the glory| of the Lord.

6for though the Lord is high, He regards the| lowly,*

But the haughty He knows| from afar.

7Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You pre-| serve my life;*

You stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand de-| livers me.

8The LORDwill fulfill His pur- | pose for me;*

Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work| of Your hands.

Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*

and to the Holy | Spirit;

As it was in the be- | ginning,*

is now, and will be forever. | Amen.

Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work| of Your hands.

Epistle,Romans 12:17-21

It is not the Christian’s responsibility to judge, but to show loving kindness to those who wish him harm.

17Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

19Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Alleluia Verse, Psalm 9

Though the world oppresses the children of God, the Father cares for those who seek His protection.

You sat on the throne giving righteous judgment. The

Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

Holy Gospel, Luke 6:36-42

As God is merciful and forgiving, we His children must also be merciful, forgiving, and kind.

[Our Lord said:] 36Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. 37“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

39He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.

41 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye”. (ESV)

God’s Stewards. The New Testament uses priest and priesthood and priestly to a limited extent; the words express certain facets of the Christian life in general. When we are characterized in 1 Peter 2 as a royal priesthood, as it was used of Israel in Exodus 19:6, the phrase implies above all that the Christian Church is a priestly people set apart for God’s service, that is, dedicated and peptized by Him to act for and on behalf of the nations. God, with Christians as His agents, sends forth His message of law and gospel to the world; and therefore we are called to act as stewards in respect to temporal gifts, together with the great spiritual treasures that we have received; and we pray that we do this in such a way that we declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light, so that the nations, too, might be drawn to the Light of the World, Jesus Christ.

Missions. BEIRUT, Lebanon: Bad news, like war and famine seem to be the leading topics of any news broadcast around the world. However, there is a ray of light and hope through Jesus, according to a Syrian reporter named Malek. The average person can change the channel to avoid the bad news, but reporters like Malek are in the unenviable position of not being able to turn away. His ray of hope comes in the form of broadcasts from the Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) ministry center in Beirut, Lebanon. “I am so blessed to be given the opportunity to listen to your radio programs,” said Malek. “You have given me hope in life among all this chaos that is happening in the world - your programs led me to see the light of Jesus Christ.” Malek said he works for a local magazine, and his articles are disseminated in several magazines and newspapers. “Throughout my career, I had only reported the bad events of the world, but after listening to your radio programs my life changed, and I feel as a fresh new person. It is time to write about the Good News - salvation in Jesus,” he said. He added that the more he listens to the LHM programs, the more he wants to know about Jesus and the Holy Bible. Malek enrolled in LHM’s Bible Correspondence Course (BCC) in order to help himself pre-pare for “his new job of reporting the Good News.” Malek said he is so happy and that this has been a major change in his life. His family is also sharing this happiness. He is determined to report the Good News and make others happy the same way he has found happiness.Your continued prayers and support for LHM allow outreach programs to have an impact all around the world. LHM operates in more than 30 countries. These ministry centers use radio and TV programming, print and Internet materials, Bible courses, dramas, music, mass evangelism, and other culturally appropriate methods to share Christ’s message of hope with those who need to hear it.
