EVT0001729: Fence Installation Specifications – KDOT, Oskaloosa, KS

The following specifications are for the installation of sections of 5 strand barbed wireand sections of 6’chain link fence with 3 strand barbed wire atop, at the Kansas Department of Transportation Sub-Area office/shop at 205 E Jefferson, Oskaloosa, Kansas. KDOT will remove existing fence prior to contractor beginning fence installation.

  1. Standards: Chain link fence to be manufactured in accordance with the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute Standard Specifications for Zinc Coated Steel Chain Link Fabric, Rails, Posts, Gates and Accessories.
  1. Materials:

Chain Link: Fabric shall be one piece, 1.2 ounce zinc-coated as per ASTM A392, 2” mesh, and 9 gauge. Fabric shall be Knuckled at one selvage and twisted at the other selvage. Line post shall be 2” OD. Drive Gate Posts shall be 4” OD. Corner Posts shall be 4” OD. All pipes shall be schedule 40 galvanized or SS 40 galvanized. Barbed wire shall be zinc coated, 4 point, and 12 gauge wires. Tension wire shall be 7 gauge galvanized wire. Fabric wires to be 12 gauge steel.

Barbed Wire: all barbed wire is to have dual line wires, each of 0.1 inch minimum nominal diameter, with four point round wire barbs, 0.08 inch minimum nominal diameter wire, at a nominal spacing of 5 inches. The dual line wires must have a unidirectional twist and have the barbs applied to one line wire only unless they are interwoven through the line wires. A Class 3 coating level is required for zinc coated barbed wire.

  1. Work: This consists of furnishing and installing approximately 1851 linear feet of 72” Chain Link fencewith 3 strands of barbed wire mounted on 45 degree brackets, the installation of 1- 24’ chain link cantilever (sliding) gate, 2-12’ chain link swing gates, approximately 960 linear feet of 4’ 2” - 5 strand barbed wire fence, and 2-16’ single pipe swing gates(see attached spec).

  1. All chain link fences shall have top and bottom tension wires mounted to fence with 9 gauge hog rings. The 72” Fence shall be installed with 3 strands of barbed wire mounted on 45 degree brackets.
  1. All barbed wire fences shall set corner posts and supports posts, and securely brace and wire before setting the intermediate posts. Space the intermediate posts equal distances apart, 13 ½ feet maximum. Set the posts plumb, firm and true to designated line and grade.
  1. All barbed wire fences shall have intermediate T posts(1.33 # / lin. Ft.- green) driven with an appropriate mechanical device a minimum of 2’6” depth. Use 1 7/8” ODpipe brace welded between 2 7/8”OD corner post and brace post. 2.Draw barbed wire taut with an approved mechanical device and securely fasten to each post with a minimum of 1 approved wire clip.Wire to be spaced evenly from top to bottom of post. Loop the wire around the end and corner posts, and fasten with sufficient staples to anchor the wire securely.
  1. a. All posts for chain link shall be set in concrete-10” x 36” hole for line post and 18” x 42” for Corner and gate post.

b. All corner, gate and brace posts for the 5 strand barb wire fence to be set in concrete- 12” x 42” hole.

c. Concrete shall be 3000psi ready mix delivered from ready mix supplier and poured from concrete truck

  1. Contractor shall furnish all necessary hardware to complete the installation.
  1. Gate posts shall be sufficiently braced to prevent gates from sagging.
  1. The contractor will be responsible for obtaining Utility locates from the Kansas One Call System or appropriate utilityproviders.K.D.O.T. will remove existing fence and notify contractor of all underground utilities within its complex that are not on the Kansas One Call System. Contractor shall give K.D.O.T. seven working days notice before beginning project so existing fence can be removed.
  1. K.D.O.T will assist the contractor with drilling of any holes that an obstruction or rock that will prevent proper post installation.
