Local Scholarship Opportunities

Thefollowing scholarships are usually available from local organizations. Applications are available on line or in the Guidance Office. Other scholarships willbe available as spring approaches. Students are notified of their availability and deadlines through Naviance.

The dates below are the due dates for the guidance office to have the scholarships to the organization. Scholarships are due to the guidance office 10 days before the due date!!!!

  1. Big Y Foods Scholarships for customers and employees is available at All big Y scholarships recognize academic merit and achievement. Applications must include the following: transcript, SAT scores, at least two letters of recommendation, including at least one from a teacher, and personal resume.Deadline is February 1.
  1. Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Auxiliary Health Care Scholarships for students who plan on entering a health-related field. Applications must include the following: a personal resume, transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a one page essay. Deadline is March 11.
  1. The W.L. Gilbert Trust Scholarships are available to all Gilbert School seniors and alumni. One application is good for all the Gilbert scholarships. Deadline is April 30.
  1. The Glenn Moon Scholarship is for students who are interested in a career in teaching. Applications must include the following: transcript, two letters of recommendation, and an essay. Deadline is March 31.
  1. The Greenwoods Scholarship has limited funding for several scholarships. Applications must include the following: a high school transcript and a copy of all the pages of your SAR. Deadline is February 15.
  1. Litchfield County Tax Collectors’ Association awards a scholarship. Applicant must write a one-page essay. Deadline is March 1.
  1. Litchfield County University Club Scholarships for seniors residing in Litchfield County. Applications must include the following: a transcript and a copy of pages 1 and 2 of the IRS Form 1040 for 2014 under separate cover. Awards are based on academics, financial need, community involvement, etc. Very competitive. Deadline is April 3.
  1. The CT State USBC Association offers a scholarship to a senior whose parent or grandparent is a current member of the CT State USBC Association. Deadline is March 17.
  2. The James L and Genevieve H Goodwin Memorial Scholarship is for seniors who plan to study silviculture or forest resource management. Deadline is March 20.
  1. NCCC offers several scholarships. Please go to for up-to-date scholarship information.
  1. Justin Wisniewski Firefighter Scholarship is based totally on volunteerism and given to firefighters, spouse, child or sibling of a firefighter. Deadline is April 1.

These are examples of scholarships that are usually offered. The organizations will forward applications to the guidance office at the appropriate time for distribution.

American Savings Foundation usually offers scholarships. Deadline in March.

The Community Foundation of Northwest CT usually offers more than 30 scholarships. Applications must include the following: a transcript and a Student Aid Report (SAR). Deadline in April.

Torrington UNICO National Club offers serval scholarships. Based on academics, financial need, and extracurricular and community involvement. Deadline in April.

Howard Jennings Scholarship is for a senior who has been accepted to UCONN and majoring in the field of Horticulture. Deadline in March.

The Isidore Wise Scholarship Program at CT Children’s Medical Center usually offers scholarships for past or present patients of the Medical Center, Newington Children’s Hospital or current or former students of the CCMC School my apply. Deadline in March.

American Savings Foundation offers scholarships to seniors who will be attending a community college, a 4-year college, or a vocational program. Deadline in March.

Education Connection offers a scholarship to a student who is interest in a field related to Education Connection’s mission statement which includes education, food services, technology, transportation, and others. Deadline in April.

The Torrington/Winsted Rotary Club offers scholarships for students attending The Gilbert School, Torrington HS, Oliver Wolcott Technical School or NNW Regional HS. Deadline in May.

The Litchfield Hills Audubon Society offers a scholarship for a student interest in environmental studies or a related field. Deadline in May.

The Winsted Lions Club usually offers two scholarships for seniors who plan to major in a humanities related field. Deadline in May.
